Regular cannabis seeds produce roughly 50% male and 50% female plants. Only females produce smokeable flower, so half your seeds are destined for the trash bin (or breeding projects). Feminized seeds solve this — they produce female plants 99%+ of the time.
The technique: chemically force a female plant to produce male pollen sacs. That pollen contains only X chromosomes (because the donor was female: XX). When it pollinates another female (also XX), the resulting seeds are XX — female.
This isn't genetic modification. It's hormonal manipulation that tricks the plant into expressing male flowering structures. The genetics are unchanged — the offspring are genetically female with a female plant's traits.
The chemistry: ethylene and sex expression
Cannabis sex expression is influenced by the plant hormone ethylene. Female flowers require ethylene signaling. When you block ethylene production or reception, the plant defaults to male flower development even if it's genetically female.
Two chemicals block ethylene in cannabis:
Silver thiosulfate (STS)
STS is a solution of silver nitrate and sodium thiosulfate that blocks ethylene receptors at the cellular level. When sprayed on female cannabis branches, it prevents those branches from developing female flowers — they produce male pollen sacs instead.
STS is the industry standard for feminized seed production. It's reliable, fast-acting, and produces consistent results.
Colloidal silver (CS)
Colloidal silver is a suspension of silver nanoparticles in water. Silver ions interfere with ethylene production (rather than blocking the receptor like STS). When sprayed repeatedly on female cannabis, it induces male flower development.
CS is the home-grower method because it's available commercially and doesn't require mixing chemicals. However, it requires more applications, takes longer, and is less reliable than STS.
