Reading Cannabis Leaves: What Your Plant Is Telling You

Cannabis leaves are a real-time diagnostic display. Every color change, curl, spot, and pattern means something specific. A visual guide to reading leaf symptoms — yellowing patterns, brown spots, curling, wilting, discoloration — and translating them into actionable diagnoses.

Cannabis leaves are constantly broadcasting the plant's health status. Color, texture, shape, and position all change in specific ways in response to specific problems. Learning to read these signals turns you from a grower who reacts to problems after damage is done into one who catches them early enough to prevent yield loss.

This isn't about memorizing every possible deficiency. It's about learning the 10 most common leaf signals — the ones you'll actually see in a home grow — and knowing what to do when you see them.

How to read a leaf

Location matters

Where on the plant the symptom appears narrows the diagnosis immediately:

Speed matters

How fast the symptom appeared:

  • Overnight/sudden: environmental — light burn, heat stress, overwatering, chemical burn from a foliar spray
  • Over 3–7 days: nutrient issue — deficiency or toxicity developing as reserves deplete or accumulate
  • Gradual over weeks: pH drift, root deterioration, slow nutrient depletion, age-related (natural lower-leaf yellowing in late flower)

The 10 most common leaf signals

1. Uniform lower-leaf yellowing

What it looks like: bottom leaves turn evenly yellow (pale green → yellow → drop off). The yellowing starts at the oldest leaves and progresses upward.

Diagnosis: nitrogen deficiency. Nitrogen is mobile — the plant pulls it from old leaves to feed new growth. This is the single most common nutrient deficiency in cannabis.

When it's normal: during late flower (weeks 6–8), some lower-leaf yellowing is expected as the plant redirects resources to buds. This is natural senescence, not a problem.

When it's a problem: during veg or early flower, uniform lower yellowing means the plant needs more nitrogen.

Fix: increase nitrogen feeding. If already feeding, check pH (nitrogen availability drops below pH 5.5 and above 7.0).

2. Yellow leaves with green veins (interveinal chlorosis)

What it looks like: the tissue between the veins turns yellow while the veins themselves stay green, creating a striped or net-like pattern.

On lower leaves: magnesium deficiency. Magnesium is mobile. The plant pulls it from old leaves, leaving the characteristic interveinal pattern.

Fix: Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) at 1 tsp per gallon in the next watering. Or add cal-mag supplement. Check pH — Mg is locked out below 5.8.

On upper/new leaves: iron deficiency. Iron is immobile. New growth shows the yellow-with-green-veins pattern.

Fix: check pH first (iron locks out above 6.5 in soil, 6.0 in hydro). If pH is correct, apply chelated iron foliar spray for fastest correction.

3. Brown spots on leaves

What it looks like: brown or rust-colored spots scattered across leaf surfaces, often starting on lower leaves.

Diagnosis depends on pattern:

  • Random brown spots, lower leaves first: calcium deficiency. Calcium is immobile — but the spots appear on lower leaves because those leaves are older and have experienced more transpiration cycles concentrating the deficiency effect. Fix: cal-mag supplement. Check pH (Ca locks out below 6.0)
  • Spots with yellow halos: potassium deficiency (lower leaves) or a fungal infection (any leaf, especially in high humidity). If spots are geometric and spread concentrically, suspect fungus. If irregular and scattered, suspect K deficiency
  • Spots at leaf tips and edges first: nutrient burn from too-concentrated feeding. The brown tips are "burnt" tissue. Fix: flush with plain water, reduce feeding strength

4. Leaf tips burning (crispy brown tips)

What it looks like: the very tips of leaves turn brown and crispy, sometimes with a yellow band behind the brown.

Diagnosis: nutrient burn. The plant is receiving more dissolved minerals than it can process. The excess accumulates at the leaf tips (the furthest point from the roots) and burns the tissue.

Severity:

  • Tips only: mild burn. Back off feeding by 10–20%
  • Tips + first ¼ inch: moderate burn. Flush with plain pH'd water, then resume feeding at 50–75% strength
  • Tips + edges + significant brown: severe burn. Full flush needed. Major reduction in feeding strength

Note: tiny brown tips (1–2mm) are actually ideal — they indicate you're feeding at the maximum the plant can handle. Many experienced growers aim for "just barely burnt tips" as the sweet spot.

5. Leaves curling upward ("taco" or "canoe")

What it looks like: leaf edges fold upward, making the leaf look like a taco or a canoe viewed from above.

Diagnosis: heat stress or light stress. The leaf is folding to reduce its exposed surface area — a survival response to excessive heat or light energy.

Fix:

  • Check temperature at canopy level. If above 82°F, improve ventilation or raise the light
  • If temperature is fine, check light intensity. The light may be too close or too intense. Raise it 4–6 inches
  • Check VPD — low humidity combined with high temperature compounds the stress

6. Leaves curling downward ("clawing")

What it looks like: leaf tips and edges curl downward, giving the leaves a claw-like appearance.

Diagnosis depends on leaf color:

  • Dark green + clawing: nitrogen toxicity. Too much nitrogen causes dark, waxy leaves that claw downward. Fix: flush and reduce nitrogen in feed
  • Normal green + clawing: overwatering. The roots are oxygen-starved and the plant can't maintain turgor properly. Fix: let the medium dry out. Water less frequently
  • Clawing on new growth only: possible root zone temperature issue or pH fluctuation affecting specific nutrient uptake

7. Wilting (drooping leaves)

What it looks like: all leaves droop simultaneously. The plant looks sad and limp.

Diagnosis:

  • Soil is wet + wilting: overwatering. Roots are suffocating. DO NOT water more. Let the medium dry out
  • Soil is dry + wilting: underwatering. Water immediately. The plant will recover within 1–4 hours
  • Soil moisture is fine + wilting: root damage (root rot, extreme pH, salt buildup). Check roots — healthy roots are white. Brown, slimy roots indicate rot

The weight test: lift the pot. Heavy = wet = don't water. Light = dry = water. This is more reliable than looking at the soil surface.

8. Purple or red stems and petioles

What it looks like: stems and leaf stalks turn purple or reddish instead of green.

Diagnosis:

  • Plant is healthy, growing well, temps are normal: genetics. Many strains have naturally purple stems. Not a problem
  • Plant is slow, cool temperatures (below 68°F): phosphorus lockout. Cold roots can't absorb phosphorus efficiently. Fix: warm the root zone (heat mat, raise pot off cold floor)
  • Purple stems + slow growth + no cold stress: check pH. Phosphorus is locked out above pH 7.0 in soil

9. Yellow or brown edges (leaf margin damage)

What it looks like: leaf edges turn yellow, then brown and crispy, progressing inward from the margin.

On lower leaves first: potassium deficiency. K is mobile and shows deficiency on older leaves. The leaf edges burn because potassium regulates water pressure in cells, and edge cells lose turgor first.

Fix: increase potassium in the feed. Most bloom nutrients are high in K. Check pH — K is less available above 7.0.

On all leaves simultaneously: heat stress. Combined with low humidity, heat causes rapid transpiration that damages leaf margins.

10. Pale new growth (light green or yellow new leaves)

What it looks like: new growth at the top of the plant comes in noticeably lighter than the rest of the plant.

Diagnosis:

  • Light yellow new growth, older leaves normal: sulfur deficiency (rare) or iron deficiency. Check pH first — both lock out at high pH. Foliar iron spray for fastest correction
  • Pale lime-green new growth, slight stretch: nitrogen deficiency beginning. The plant is redirecting all available N to the newest growth but there isn't enough. Increase N
  • White/bleached new growth: light burn. The newest growth closest to the light is being bleached by excessive PPFD. Raise the light immediately

The diagnostic process

When you see a leaf problem:

  1. Where is it? Top (immobile nutrient) or bottom (mobile nutrient) or everywhere (environment)?
  2. How fast did it appear? Sudden (environment) or gradual (nutrient)?
  3. What color is it? Yellow (N, Mg, Fe, S), brown spots (Ca, K, burn), dark green (N toxicity), purple (P, genetics)
  4. Check pH. Most "deficiencies" are actually pH lockout. The nutrient is in the soil but the pH prevents absorption. Fix pH before adding more nutrients
  5. Check environment. Temperature, humidity, light distance, and watering frequency cause most symptoms that look like nutrient problems but aren't

The 80/20 rule: 80% of leaf problems in home grows are caused by pH issues, overwatering, or light stress. Check those three before reaching for supplements.

Common mistakes

  1. Treating symptoms without checking pH — adding cal-mag when calcium is locked out by low pH just adds more minerals the plant can't absorb. Fix pH first, then see if the symptom resolves before supplementing
  2. Reacting to every yellow leaf — some lower-leaf yellowing during flower is normal. Don't chase every yellow leaf with nitrogen — excess N during flower reduces bud quality
  3. Diagnosing from a single leaf — one weird leaf isn't a diagnosis. A pattern across multiple leaves IS. Look at the whole plant, not one leaf
  4. Overreacting — the most common response to a leaf symptom is to add something. The better first response is usually to check something (pH, temperature, watering frequency). Adding nutrients to a locked-out plant makes the problem worse
