The nutrient aisle at a grow store is designed to confuse you. Dozens of bottles, three-part systems, boosters, supplements, microbial inoculants, enzyme formulas — all promising bigger buds, frostier trichomes, and explosive growth. You can spend $30 or $300 on nutrients for a single grow cycle, and the results will be surprisingly similar.
This guide cuts through the marketing. Here's what the major nutrient lines actually contain, what differentiates them, and where your money is and isn't well spent.
What all nutrients contain
Every cannabis nutrient line provides the same 16 essential elements. The plant doesn't care what brand they come from:
Macronutrients (needed in large amounts):
- Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K)
- Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Sulfur (S)
Micronutrients (needed in trace amounts):
- Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu)
- Boron (B), Molybdenum (Mo), Chlorine (Cl)
- Nickel (Ni), Cobalt (Co), Silicon (Si — beneficial but not essential)
Every bottle on the shelf delivers some combination of these elements. The differences are in ratios, form (chelated vs. non-chelated), concentration, and price per gram of nutrient.
The major lines compared
General Hydroponics Flora Series
The line: Flora Micro, Flora Gro, Flora Bloom (3-part)
Cost per grow (4×4 tent): $25–40
Pros:
- The industry standard. Used in more cannabis grows worldwide than any other line
- Lucas Formula (only Micro + Bloom) simplifies to 2 parts and works extremely well
- Widely available, consistent quality
- Decades of proven results
- Very cost-effective per gram of nutrient
Cons:
- The 3-part mixing is more complex than 2-part or 1-part systems
- pH stability could be better (frequent adjustment needed)
- The brand has many "supplement" add-ons that aren't necessary
Verdict: excellent value. The Flora series with Lucas Formula (skip Gro entirely — use 8ml Micro + 16ml Bloom per gallon throughout) is arguably the best cost-to-performance ratio in the industry.
Fox Farm Trio
The line: Grow Big, Big Bloom, Tiger Bloom (3-part)
Cost per grow (4×4 tent): $30–50
Pros:
- Very popular with soil growers
- Big Bloom is organic (worm castings + bat guano based)
- Straightforward feeding schedule
- Widely available at garden centers (not just grow stores)
Cons:
- Higher salt content than some lines — can cause lockout if over-applied
- Requires more flushing between transitions
- The "dirty dozen" supplement line is expensive and mostly unnecessary
Verdict: good entry-level line for soil growers. The trio itself is solid value. Avoid the supplements unless you have a specific deficiency to address.
Advanced Nutrients pH Perfect
The line: Micro, Grow, Bloom (3-part, pH self-adjusting)
Cost per grow (4×4 tent): $60–120 (base) to $200+ (with their recommended supplements)
Pros:
- pH Perfect technology genuinely self-adjusts pH within a range (reduces pH management)
- Chelated micronutrients for better uptake
- Extensive research backing
Cons:
- Significantly more expensive than competitors
- The upsell ecosystem (Bud Candy, Big Bud, Overdrive, B-52, etc.) is aggressive and expensive
- The base 3-part alone produces results comparable to GH Flora at 3–4× the price
- The pH Perfect range is narrow — outside of it, you still need to manually adjust
Verdict: the pH Perfect technology is a genuine convenience. But the nutrient content is similar to competitors at 3×+ the price. If pH management frustrates you, it's worth the premium. If not, save the money.
Jacks 321
The line: Part A (5-12-26) + Calcium Nitrate (15.5-0-0) + Epsom Salt (3 dry products)
Cost per grow (4×4 tent): $15–25
Pros:
- By far the cheapest quality nutrient option
- Dry salts = no water weight shipping cost
- Extremely consistent (pharmaceutical-grade salts)
- Simple: 3.6g Part A + 2.4g CalNit + 1.2g Epsom per gallon for everything from veg through flower
- Used by many commercial operations for its consistency and cost
- One ratio for the entire grow (some growers reduce Part A slightly in flower)
Cons:
- No pH buffering (you'll adjust pH manually every time)
- Dry salts require accurate measurement (a $15 scale)
- Not organic
- Less forgiving of measurement errors than liquid concentrates
- No micronutrient extras (but the plant doesn't need them in most cases)
Verdict: the best value in cannabis nutrition. The results are indistinguishable from nutrient lines costing 5–10× more. If you don't mind mixing dry salts and adjusting pH, Jacks is the rational choice.
Canna Coco A+B
The line: Coco A + Coco B (2-part, designed for coco coir)
Cost per grow (4×4 tent): $40–60
Pros:
- Specifically formulated for coco coir (different Ca:Mg ratios than soil nutrients)
- 2-part system is simpler than 3-part
- Excellent results in coco — one of the most trusted coco lines
- Well-researched, consistent
Cons:
- More expensive than GH or Jacks
- Only optimal for coco (not ideal for soil or hydro without adjustment)
- The Canna supplement line (Boost, Cannazym, PK 13/14) adds up quickly
Verdict: if you grow in coco, Canna A+B is an excellent choice. The coco-specific formulation matters because coco's cation exchange properties require different calcium and magnesium ratios than soil or water culture.
Athena Pro
The line: Core + Bloom (2-part dry) or Blended liquid line
Cost per grow (4×4 tent): $30–50
Pros:
- Used by many top-tier commercial operations
- Clean formulation, minimal buildup
- 2-part simplicity
- Competitive pricing for the quality
Cons:
- Less available at retail (primarily online)
- Relatively new to the home grower market
- The liquid line is more expensive than the dry
Verdict: strong choice for growers who want commercial- grade nutrition without commercial-grade pricing. The dry line is particularly cost-effective.
The supplement question
Every nutrient brand sells a lineup of supplements beyond the base nutrients: bloom boosters, carbohydrate additives, vitamin B supplements, enzyme products, amino acids, silica, and more.
Worth using
- Cal-Mag: genuine deficiency correction if your water is soft or you're using RO water. Skip if your tap water is moderately hard
- Silica (potassium silicate): strengthens cell walls, heat resistance, pest resistance. One of the few supplements with solid supporting research
- Mycorrhizal inoculant: beneficial fungal root colonizers. Apply once at transplant — the fungi establish and persist. Great Organics, MycoApply, or Mykos
Probably not worth it
- PK boosters: your base bloom nutrient already has phosphorus and potassium. Adding more risks lockout and rarely produces measurable yield increases in properly fed plants
- Carbohydrate / sugar products: plants make their own sugars via photosynthesis. Adding sugar to the root zone doesn't increase bud sugar content. It feeds soil bacteria, which is fine in organic soil but unnecessary in synthetic grows
- B-vitamin supplements: no evidence of benefit in healthy, well-fed cannabis
Definitely not worth it
- "Flushing agents": water does the same thing. For free
- "Ripening" products: late-flower potassium products with dramatic marketing claims. Your bloom nutrient already provides this
- Anything promising "50% yield increase": if it were true, every commercial operation would use it
The real comparison
Here's what matters: final product quality when each line is used correctly with proper pH, feeding strength, and environmental control:

The pattern: all quality nutrient lines produce excellent results when used correctly. The difference in final product quality between a $15 Jacks grow and a $200 Advanced Nutrients grow is negligible — IF the grower controls pH, doesn't over-feed, and provides adequate light and environment.
The actual variables that affect quality (ranked by impact):
- Light intensity and quality
- Environmental control (temp, humidity, VPD)
- Genetics (strain choice)
- Training and canopy management
- pH management
- Watering practices
- Nutrient brand ← this is last
Common mistakes
- Buying the most expensive line — price doesn't correlate with results in cannabis nutrition. Jacks at $15/grow matches Advanced Nutrients at $200/grow when used correctly
- Following the brand's feeding schedule at full strength — every nutrient company's published schedule is too strong. Start at 50% of the recommended dose and increase based on plant response. The company benefits from you using more product faster
- Buying all the supplements — the base 2-part or 3-part nutrient is sufficient for excellent cannabis. Supplements address specific problems, not general performance. Buy them when you have a specific issue, not as insurance
- Switching nutrient lines mid-grow — different lines have different ratios and pH interactions. Switching mid-cycle creates confusion and inconsistency. Pick a line and run the full cycle before evaluating
- Blaming the nutrients for environmental problems — nutrient brand is the last variable that matters. If your results are poor, check light, temperature, humidity, and pH before switching brands
