Outdoor cannabis growing is the oldest and simplest method — a plant, sunlight, water, soil. But simplicity doesn't mean easy. Outdoor grows face challenges that indoor growers never encounter: weather, pests, theft, animals, light pollution, and the fundamental constraint that you can't control the environment.
This guide covers three outdoor approaches — guerrilla (remote, hidden plots), backyard (private property), and balcony (urban apartment) — because the strategies for each are meaningfully different.
The outdoor advantage
Before diving into methods, here's why outdoor growing is worth considering:
- Free light. The sun delivers 1500+ PPFD at peak — more intensity than any grow light, with a perfect spectrum including UV-B that promotes trichome production
- Free ventilation. Wind provides constant air exchange and stem strengthening
- Massive plants possible. No height limits, no tent walls. An outdoor photoperiod plant can reach 6–10 feet and yield 1–5 pounds
- Lower cost. No electricity bill, no equipment (or minimal). Soil + seeds + water = a harvest
- Terpene expression. Many growers report superior terpene profiles from outdoor-grown cannabis, potentially due to the full UV spectrum from natural sunlight
Method 1: Backyard growing
The basics
Growing in your own yard, raised bed, or garden — the most straightforward outdoor method in legal states.
Site selection
- Full sun: minimum 6 hours of direct sunlight, ideally 8–10+ hours. South-facing exposure is best in the Northern Hemisphere
- Wind protection: gentle breeze is good. High winds damage branches and stress plants. A fence, wall, or hedge on the windward side helps
- Privacy: even in legal states, visible cannabis plants attract unwanted attention. Position away from fence lines, public paths, and neighbor sight lines
- Drainage: cannabis roots don't tolerate standing water. Raised beds or sloped ground prevent waterlogging
Containers vs. ground
In-ground:
- Unlimited root space = bigger plants
- Better drought resilience (deep roots access moisture)
- Requires amending native soil (most yard soil needs compost, perlite, and amendments)
- Harder to move if needed
Containers (raised beds, fabric pots):
- Control over the growing medium
- Portable — can move to chase sunlight or bring indoors during early/late season
- Limits final plant size (20-gallon minimum for full-sized outdoor plants; 30–50 gallon is ideal)
- Requires more frequent watering
WNY outdoor timeline

The WNY challenge: the growing season is short. First frost around October 15–20 means you need strains that finish flowering in 8 weeks or less to harvest before frost. Late- finishing sativas (10+ week flower) may not mature in WNY.

Method 2: Guerrilla growing
What it is
Growing in remote, hidden locations on public or unused private land. Guerrilla growing exists because not everyone has a backyard, and indoor growing isn't possible for everyone.
Important: in states where growing is legal (like New York), guerrilla growing on land you don't own is still potentially trespassing. Know your local laws.
Site selection
The ideal guerrilla site has:
- Access to water: within reasonable carrying distance of a creek, pond, or water source. Carrying water long distances is the hardest part of guerrilla growing
- Southern exposure: sunlight is non-negotiable. Dense tree canopy blocks too much light
- Not visible from trails, roads, or aerial views: choose clearings within woods, edges of overgrown fields, or areas with natural visual barriers
- Good soil or space for containers: native forest soil is often acidic and low-nutrient. Many guerrilla growers dig holes and fill with prepared soil mix
- Drainage: hillsides and slopes drain naturally. Valley bottoms and flat areas can flood
Security considerations
- Visit infrequently. Every visit creates trails that others may follow. Once established, visit only for watering and maintenance — not to "check on things"
- Multiple sites. Don't put all plants in one location. Split across 2–3 sites so that discovery of one doesn't mean total loss
- Vary your route. Don't walk the same path every time. Repeated foot traffic creates visible trails
- No scent trail. Don't handle plants and then walk through public areas. Change clothes if needed
Watering logistics
The biggest operational challenge in guerrilla growing:
- Self-watering systems: bury a 5-gallon bucket with small holes next to the plant. Fill on visits and it slow-releases water
- Water gel crystals: mixed into the soil, these absorb and slowly release water. Extends time between watering visits
- Rainfed only: in climates with regular summer rain (like WNY), established plants in good soil may survive on rainfall alone — but yields suffer during dry spells
- Creek/pond proximity: if the site is near water, a portable camp pump and hose simplifies watering
Method 3: Balcony growing
The basics
Growing 1–3 plants on an apartment or condo balcony. The most space-constrained outdoor method.
What you need
- Direct sunlight: the balcony needs 5+ hours of direct sun. North-facing balconies usually don't work
- Containers: 5–10 gallon fabric pots. Limited by balcony weight capacity and floor space
- Autoflowers recommended: they stay small, don't require light schedule control, and finish fast (seed to harvest in 70–90 days)
- Wind protection: high-floor balconies get strong winds. Position pots against the building wall and secure tall plants
Balcony-specific challenges
- Light pollution: street lights, building lights, and neighboring apartments can disrupt photoperiod flowering. Autoflowers avoid this problem entirely
- Smell: a flowering cannabis plant on a balcony is detectable by neighbors above, below, and adjacent. Choose low-odor strains or accept the social implications
- Visibility: balcony plants are visible from outside. In legal states this is a personal choice. In others, it's a risk
- Watering: container plants on hot balconies may need watering twice daily in summer. Consider self-watering pots or drip irrigation on a timer
Outdoor pest management
Outdoor cannabis faces pest pressures that indoor growers never encounter:

The budworm problem
Caterpillars (especially corn earworm / budworm) are the #1 pest threat to outdoor cannabis. They bore into buds and their frass (droppings) inside the bud causes Botrytis (bud rot).
Prevention: spray BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) every 7–14 days from early flower through harvest. BT is organic, non-toxic to humans, and breaks down in sunlight within days. It specifically kills caterpillar larvae without harming beneficial insects.
Inspection: check inside the largest buds by gently squeezing — healthy buds are uniformly firm. Buds with caterpillar damage have soft spots, brown areas, or visible frass. Pull apart and inspect any suspicious buds.
Outdoor training
Outdoor plants have unlimited space but benefit from training for yield and stealth:
- Topping: top once above node 5–6 to create multiple main colas. This also reduces height (important for stealth)
- LST: bend branches outward and stake to create a wide, low canopy. An outdoor plant trained flat can be 6 feet wide and only 3 feet tall
- Caging: a tomato cage provides structure for heavy branches and keeps the plant from falling over in wind
- SCROG (outdoor): a horizontal net supported by stakes creates a flat outdoor canopy. Less common but effective for maximizing light exposure
Harvesting outdoor plants
When to harvest

Weather considerations
Harvest before:
- First frost (freezing kills plant tissue and degrades cannabinoids)
- Extended rain during late flower (moisture in dense buds causes Botrytis)
- Severe storms that can damage mature plants
The rain dilemma: if heavy rain is forecast during the last week before harvest, you may need to harvest early to avoid bud rot. A tarp or temporary shelter over the plant can protect it for a few days but isn't a long-term solution.
Common mistakes
- Starting too late in cold climates — in WNY, seeds need to start indoors by April. Planting outdoors in June means the plant doesn't have enough veg time to produce meaningful yield before the October frost deadline
- Choosing slow-finishing strains — a 12-week sativa in WNY starts flowering in August and needs until November to finish. Frost kills it in October. Choose 7–9 week flower strains for northern climates
- Not protecting against caterpillars — budworms are inevitable in most outdoor environments. BT spray every 7–14 days during flower is non-negotiable for outdoor grows
- Underwatering container plants — a 10-gallon fabric pot in full sun and 85°F air can dry out in a single day. Outdoor containers need more frequent watering than in-ground plants
- Ignoring light pollution — a street light shining on your plant during the dark period prevents flowering or causes revegging/hermaphrodites. Scout the location at night before committing
