Managing the Flower Stretch: Weeks 1–3 of Bloom

Cannabis can double in height during the first three weeks of flower. How to predict, plan for, and control the stretch — supercropping, trellis nets, dimming, temperature differentials, and when to flip based on available headroom.

You flip to 12/12 with a nice, manageable canopy — and three weeks later the tallest cola is touching the light. The flower stretch is the most dramatic growth phase in a cannabis plant's life, and it catches more growers off guard than any other single event.

The stretch isn't a problem. It's predictable, manageable, and actually necessary for proper bud development. But you need to plan for it before you flip, not after the tallest branch is burning against the LED.

What is the stretch?

When cannabis transitions from vegetative growth to flowering (triggered by switching to 12/12), it enters a rapid vertical growth phase lasting 2–3 weeks. During this period, internodes elongate and the plant gains significant height — sometimes doubling.

Why it happens

The stretch is driven by:

  • Hormonal shift: the flowering hormone cascade triggers rapid stem elongation to position flower sites above competing vegetation (an evolutionary adaptation for pollination)
  • Auxin redistribution: auxin moves downward, promoting internode elongation rather than lateral branching
  • Far-red sensitivity: lower red:far-red ratios during the longer dark period encourage elongation

How much will it stretch?

The practical rule: expect your plant to at least 50% taller after the stretch is complete. Sativa-dominant strains may double or more.

When does it end?

The stretch typically lasts 2–3 weeks from the flip to 12/12. By week 3–4 of flower, vertical growth slows dramatically and the plant redirects energy to bud development. You'll know the stretch is over when new internode growth stops and you see pistils thickening into actual flower clusters.

Planning for the stretch

The flip height rule

Flip when the canopy is at 50% of your maximum usable height. This accounts for the stretch plus the minimum distance needed between the canopy and the light.

Example calculation:

  • Tent height: 80 inches
  • Light + hanging hardware: 10 inches down from ceiling
  • Minimum canopy-to-light distance: 12 inches (LED)
  • Maximum canopy height: 80 − 10 − 12 = 58 inches
  • Flip height (50%): 29 inches

For sativa-dominant strains: flip at 33% of maximum usable height (they may triple).

Account for the pot

Your plant height includes the pot. A 5-gallon fabric pot is 10–12 inches tall. If your plant is 20 inches in the pot, the canopy is only 8–10 inches above the pot rim. Don't measure from the floor to the top of the plant — measure from the canopy to the light.

Controlling the stretch

1. Temperature differential (DIF)

The difference between day and night temperature affects internode length:

  • Positive DIF (day warmer than night): normal stretch. Standard conditions
  • Negative DIF (night warmer than day): reduces internode elongation. Running the first few hours of the light period 5–10°F cooler than the dark period can reduce stretch by 10–20%
  • Zero DIF (equal day/night): moderate stretch reduction

Practical implementation:

  • Turn on the exhaust fan (or AC) at full speed for the first 2 hours of the light period to cool the tent
  • Reduce fan speed during the dark period to allow gentle warming
  • This is easiest in winter (cool mornings) and hardest in summer

2. Supercropping

Supercropping (intentional stem bending) reduces effective height without removing growth:

  • Gently crush the inner pith of the stem between your thumb and forefinger at the point where you want the bend
  • Fold the branch over at the crushed point — it should hinge, not snap
  • The branch will recover in 2–3 days, forming a thick knuckle at the bend that actually improves nutrient flow

When to supercrop during stretch:

  • Any branch that outgrows the canopy can be supercropped flat
  • Do it in the first 2 weeks of flower while stems are still flexible
  • By week 3, stems lignify (harden) and become brittle — supercropping late risks snapping

3. Trellis net (SCROG)

A horizontal trellis net at canopy height constrains vertical growth by weaving branches horizontally through the grid:

  • Install the net at the desired maximum canopy height before flipping
  • As branches grow through the net, tuck them back under and weave horizontally
  • The net distributes the stretch energy outward instead of upward
  • Continue tucking for the first 2 weeks of flower, then let vertical growth push through for bud development

4. Light height management

During the stretch, raise the light as the canopy approaches:

  • Check canopy-to-light distance daily during weeks 1–3 of flower
  • Maintain the manufacturer's recommended minimum distance (typically 12–18 inches for LEDs)
  • If the light can't go higher, reduce intensity by 10–20% and supercrop the tallest branches
  • Light stress (bleaching, taco leaves) happens fast when a stretching cola closes the gap overnight

Commercial operations sometimes use PGRs (paclobutrazol, daminozide) to suppress stretch. These are NOT recommended for home grows:

  • Residues persist in flower tissue
  • Health effects of smoking PGR-treated cannabis are concerning
  • Unnecessary for home grows where physical training achieves the same result without chemical residues
  • Some PGRs are illegal to use on consumable crops

What to do during the stretch

The stretch period has its own care requirements:

Feeding

  • Increase nitrogen slightly during weeks 1–2 of flower. The plant is still building vegetative tissue (stems, leaves) during the stretch. Don't switch to full bloom nutrients on day one of 12/12
  • Transition feeding: week 1 = 75% veg / 25% bloom; week 2 = 50/50; week 3+ = full bloom
  • Increase total feeding — the stretch is the highest- metabolism period. The plant needs more of everything

Watering

  • Transpiration increases during the stretch (rapid growth + more leaf area)
  • Water consumption may increase 20–50%
  • Check soil moisture more frequently and water when the top inch is dry

Defoliation (careful)

Some growers remove large fan leaves during the stretch to improve light penetration. If you defoliate:

  • Wait until day 7–10 of the stretch (let the plant acclimate to the new light schedule first)
  • Remove only leaves that are blocking bud sites below
  • Don't strip more than 20% of leaves in one session
  • The plant is under hormonal stress during the transition — heavy defoliation compounds it

Lollipopping

Removing the lower 1/3 of growth (small side shoots that won't develop into quality buds) is best done at the END of the stretch, around day 14–21 of flower:

  • By this point, you can see which branches made it to the light and which are shaded
  • Remove small, shaded shoots and redirect energy to the illuminated canopy
  • One clean lollipop session during the stretch transition is less stressful than gradual stripping over weeks

Emergency stretch management

If the canopy is already too close to the light:

  1. Raise the light to maximum height
  2. Supercrop the tallest colas immediately — bend them sideways at the highest point you can safely bend
  3. Reduce light intensity by 20% to prevent bleaching while you manage the height
  4. Add a SCROG net even mid-stretch if needed — weave everything flat
  5. As a last resort: tie the tallest branches down to the pot rim or tent poles to physically pull them below the danger zone

Do NOT top during flower. Removing the main cola during flower wastes the plant's energy investment and significantly reduces yield. Physical bending (supercropping, tying) is always preferable to cutting during bloom.

Strain-specific planning

If you're growing a stretch-heavy strain (sativa-dominant) in a short tent:

  • Use the full veg period for aggressive LST and topping to create a flat canopy before flipping
  • Flip earlier (shorter veg) so the pre-flip height is lower
  • Consider a SCROG net to convert vertical stretch into horizontal spread
  • Run a negative DIF temperature strategy during weeks 1–3

If you're growing a low-stretch strain (indica-dominant) in a tall tent:

  • You can veg longer and flip taller
  • The stretch is a bonus — it creates spacing between bud sites that improves airflow and reduces mold risk

Common mistakes

  1. Not accounting for stretch when deciding to flip — if you flip when the canopy fills your tent, you'll be fighting the light by week 3. Flip at 50% of your available height (or 33% for sativas)
  2. Switching to full bloom nutrients on day 1 of 12/12 — the plant is still growing vegetatively during the stretch. Transition gradually over 2–3 weeks
  3. Heavy defoliation during the stretch — the plant is already stressed by the hormonal shift. Heavy leaf removal compounds the stress. Wait until the stretch is over for major defoliation
  4. Ignoring the tallest branch — one branch touching the light can bleach an entire cola in 24 hours. Check daily and supercrop any branch that gets within 10 inches of the LED
  5. Panicking and topping during flower — never cut the main growth tip during bloom. Supercrop (bend), tie down, or raise the light. Cutting removes the most productive bud site
