You've grown great flower. You've dried and cured it properly. Now you have options beyond smoking buds — concentrates take the best parts of the flower (trichomes, cannabinoids, terpenes) and remove everything else (plant matter, chlorophyll, wax). The result is a product that's 2–4× more potent than flower, with flavors that can be more intense and complex than the source material.
This guide is a grower's overview of every major concentrate type: what it is, how it's made, whether you can make it at home, and what separates good concentrate from mediocre.

Solventless concentrates (home-grower friendly)
Kief
What it is: the trichome heads that fall off cannabis when it's ground, handled, or sieved. The fine powder that collects in the bottom chamber of a grinder is kief.
How to collect it:
- Use a grinder with a kief catcher (the bottom screen chamber)
- Store trim in the freezer and shake it in a bag — kief falls off frozen trichomes easily
- Run trim over a 120µ screen
Quality: kief is the lowest-quality concentrate because it's contaminated with plant material. The typical kief from a grinder is 30–50% cannabinoids. It's still a significant potency boost when sprinkled on flower.
Dry sift
What it is: a refined version of kief. Instead of passively collecting what falls off, you actively sieve dried cannabis through progressively finer screens to isolate trichome heads.
Quality: proper multi-pass dry sift (120µ → 90µ → 70µ) produces 50–70% cannabinoid content. With static tech cleaning, it can reach near-full-melt quality. See our bubble hash and dry sift guide.
Bubble hash (ice water hash)
What it is: cannabis trichomes extracted using ice water and mesh bags. The cold makes trichome stalks brittle; agitation snaps them off; the trichome heads are collected by size through a series of screens.
Quality: the 73µ and 90µ fractions of properly made bubble hash from quality starting material can reach "full melt" (6-star) — meaning it melts completely when dabbed with zero residue. This is premium solventless concentrate.

Flower rosin
What it is: concentrate extracted from cannabis flower using only heat and pressure. A rosin press squeezes a bud between heated plates, and the resin flows out as a translucent, terpene-rich oil.
How to make it at home:
- Take a dense, frosty bud (0.5–2g)
- Place it in a rosin bag (25µ or 37µ mesh)
- Press between the plates of a rosin press at 180–220°F for 45–90 seconds
- The oil that squeezes out is flower rosin — collect it on parchment paper
Equipment:
- A dedicated rosin press ($200–500 for a quality home unit — Dabpress, NugSmasher, Rosineer)
- A hair straightener works for experimentation ($15) but produces inconsistent results and low yield
- Rosin bags ($10 for 50+)
Quality: flower rosin is 60–80% cannabinoids with excellent terpene preservation (the low temperature preserves volatile terpenes). Quality depends heavily on the starting material — frosty, resinous flower produces the best rosin.
Yield: typically 15–25% return (1g of bud produces 0.15–0.25g of rosin). Higher for very resinous strains.

Hash rosin
What it is: rosin pressed from bubble hash instead of flower. The starting material is already purified trichomes, so the result is cleaner, more potent, and more flavorful than flower rosin.
The process:
- Make bubble hash from fresh frozen or dried material
- Dry the hash thoroughly
- Press the hash in a rosin bag at low temperature (160–190°F)
- Collect the output — this is hash rosin
Quality: hash rosin from quality starting material is the pinnacle of solventless concentration. 70–90% cannabinoids with the full terpene profile preserved. This is what wins cannabis cups in the solventless category.
Live rosin
What it is: hash rosin made from fresh-frozen starting material (plant material frozen immediately after harvest, never dried). "Live" means the terpene profile is as close to the living plant as possible — no terpene loss from drying.
The process:
- Harvest the plant → immediately freeze (within 2 hours)
- Make bubble hash from the fresh-frozen material
- Freeze-dry the bubble hash (or microplane and air-dry)
- Press the hash into rosin at low temperature
Quality: live rosin is the highest-quality cannabis concentrate available. It preserves terpenes that evaporate during drying, captures the full flavor and aroma of the living plant, and contains no solvents. It's also the most expensive concentrate on the market ($60–100/gram retail).
For home growers: this is absolutely achievable, but requires quality starting material, a bubble bag set, and a rosin press. The investment pays off if you're growing resinous strains.
Solvent-based concentrates (not for home production)
These concentrates use chemical solvents (butane, propane, ethanol, or CO₂) to dissolve trichomes from plant material, then the solvent is purged. They're produced commercially in licensed labs with safety equipment. Do not attempt butane or propane extraction at home.
BHO: shatter, wax, budder, crumble
What it is: butane hash oil — cannabis extracted using liquid butane. Different post-processing techniques produce different textures:

Live resin
What it is: BHO made from fresh-frozen plant material (never dried). The "live" designation means the same thing as in live rosin — maximum terpene preservation.
Quality: live resin is one of the most flavorful concentrate types. The butane extraction captures a broader terpene profile than most solventless methods, and the fresh-frozen starting material preserves volatile terpenes that drying would destroy.
How it compares to live rosin: both use fresh-frozen material and produce exceptional terpene profiles. Live resin uses butane; live rosin uses only heat and pressure. Live rosin commands a premium because it's solventless.
Distillate
What it is: cannabis oil refined through short-path distillation to isolate specific cannabinoids (usually THC or CBD). The result is a nearly pure cannabinoid oil — 85–99% THC with almost no terpenes, flavonoids, or other plant compounds.
Characteristics: distillate is odorless, flavorless, and very potent. It's the base ingredient in most commercial vape cartridges and edibles. Manufacturers add terpenes back (either cannabis-derived or botanical) for flavor in vape products.
The trade-off: maximum potency but minimal entourage effect. Distillate feels different from full-spectrum concentrates because it's missing the terpene and minor cannabinoid synergy that shapes the experience.
Diamonds and sauce
What it is: THCA crystalline (the "diamonds") suspended in a terpene-rich liquid (the "sauce"). Made through a controlled crystallization process where THCA precipitates out of a supersaturated solution.
Quality: diamonds can be 95–99% THCA. The sauce surrounding them is a concentrated terpene extract. Together, they provide extreme potency with excellent flavor.
What to grow for concentrates
Not all cannabis makes great concentrate. What you want in concentrate starting material:
- Dense trichome coverage — the more resin, the higher the yield
- Large trichome heads — bigger heads = more cannabinoids per trichome = better extraction efficiency
- Strong terpene profile — concentrates amplify terpenes. A strain that smells average as flower smells average-times-ten as concentrate
- Dense, resinous buds — airy, leafy buds produce lower yields and more plant contamination

How to tell if a concentrate is good (whether you made it or bought it):
