You spent months dialing in your grow. The buds are dense, frosty, and smell incredible on the plant. Now comes the part most growers get wrong: drying.
Bad drying is the #1 way to ruin a great harvest. Too fast and you get hay-smelling, harsh flower that makes people cough. Too slow and you get mold. This guide covers how to set up and manage a drying environment that preserves everything you worked for.
Why drying matters more than most growers think
When you chop a cannabis plant, the buds are 75–80% water. During drying, you reduce that to 10–12%. How you remove that water determines:
- Terpene preservation — volatile terpenes evaporate at low temperatures. Fast drying at high temps = terpene loss = no smell
- Chlorophyll breakdown — chlorophyll breaks down slowly during a proper dry. Rush it, and the remaining chlorophyll makes the smoke harsh and green-tasting
- Cannabinoid stability — THCA and other cannabinoids are more stable in slow, controlled drying conditions
- Mold risk — too slow or too humid, and Botrytis or Aspergillus colonize the buds from the inside out
The ideal dry is a slow, controlled evaporation over 7–14 days in a dark room with stable temperature and humidity.
The environment targets

The #1 rule: 60/60 — aim for 60°F and 60% RH. It's the simplest target to remember and produces excellent results. Anything in the 58–65°F and 55–62% range works.
What happens at wrong temperatures

Equipment you need
The minimum setup (tent dry)
You can dry in your grow tent after harvest:
- Turn off the grow light — complete darkness
- Run the exhaust fan on low — just enough to cycle air gently
- Add a hygrometer — monitor temp and RH constantly
- Hang branches from the tent's horizontal bars or a drying line
This works for small harvests but has limitations — you can't grow your next round while drying, and controlling temp/RH in a tent is harder than a dedicated space.
The dedicated drying room
For serious growers, a dedicated drying space:
- Small room, closet, or cabinet — a 4×4 closet works perfectly for a home grow harvest
- Box fan or small oscillating fan — aimed at the wall, not at the buds. You want air circulation, not a breeze on the flower
- Dehumidifier or humidifier — depending on your climate. Dry climates need a humidifier; humid climates need a dehumidifier
- Small AC unit or heater — to hold 60–65°F. In summer you may need cooling; in winter you may need a bit of heat
- Data-logging hygrometer — Govee WiFi sensors are cheap and let you monitor from your phone. Two sensors: one at bud level, one at floor level (humidity stratifies)
Drying line or rack
Hanging (recommended for most growers):
- Hang whole branches or partial branches from a line, wire, or hanger
- Buds dry more evenly because the stem feeds moisture outward gradually
- Takes more space but produces better results
Drying rack (for space-constrained):
- Mesh drying racks (like the stackable round ones)
- Buds dry faster because they're trimmed from the stem
- Rotate buds daily to prevent flat spots and uneven drying
- Higher risk of over-drying — check buds twice daily
The drying process
Step 1: Harvest and trim (or not)
Two approaches:
Wet trim: trim fan leaves and sugar leaves off the buds immediately after cutting, then hang the trimmed buds.
- Pros: faster, buds look cleaner sooner
- Cons: buds dry faster (less leaf protection), less terpene preservation
- Best for: dry climates, when you need faster drying
Dry trim (recommended): cut whole branches, remove only the large fan leaves, and hang with sugar leaves still attached. Trim the sugar leaves after drying.
- Pros: slower dry, better terpene preservation, leaves protect buds
- Cons: slower, more trimming work at the end
- Best for: most situations, especially humid climates
Step 2: Hang the branches
- Leave 6–8 inches between branches for airflow
- Don't let buds touch each other or the wall
- Hang from sturdy line or wire (not string, which can cut into stems)
- Larger branches hang by the stem; smaller ones can be clipped to a hanger or drying line
Step 3: Monitor and adjust
Day 1–3: humidity will spike as the buds release moisture. You may need to increase exhaust or run a dehumidifier to stay in the 55–62% range.
Day 3–5: the outer buds start feeling dry to the touch. Small buds may be approaching done. Check stems — they should still bend, not snap.
Day 5–7: stems of smaller branches start to snap. Buds feel dry on the outside but still have some give when squeezed.
Day 7–14: the "snap test" — small stems snap cleanly when bent. Larger stems may still bend (that's fine — they take longer). Buds feel dry on the outside with slight resistance when squeezed.
Step 4: The snap test
The primary indicator that drying is complete:
- Small stems snap when bent (they don't fold or bend)
- Larger stems crack but may not snap completely
- Buds feel dry on the outside but not crispy
- The bud springs back slightly when squeezed (it's not completely dessicated)
If stems still bend without snapping, the buds aren't dry enough for jarring. If buds crumble when touched, you've over-dried (you can still recover somewhat during the cure, but some damage is done).
Common mistakes
1. Drying too fast
The most common mistake. Signs: buds smell like hay or grass 3 days in, outer surface is crispy while inside is still wet.
Fix: lower the temperature, reduce airflow, add a humidifier if RH is below 50%.
2. Fan blowing directly on buds
Moving air is important. Wind on buds is not. Direct airflow creates dry spots on the surface while the interior stays wet, and it strips terpenes off the surface.
Fix: point fans at walls or the ceiling. The air should circulate the room, not blow on the flower.
3. Not checking for mold
Dense colas can harbor mold inside even when the outside looks fine. During days 3–7, gently squeeze the largest colas and check for any mushy, dark, or gray spots inside.
Fix: if you find mold, remove the affected bud immediately and increase airflow/reduce humidity. Inspect nearby buds — mold spreads.
4. Drying in light
Light (especially UV) degrades THC into CBN and breaks down terpenes. The drying room should be dark. If you need to check buds, use a dim green light briefly.
5. Ignoring temperature
Growers focus on humidity but forget temperature. A room at 78°F and 60% RH will produce worse buds than 62°F and 60% RH, even though the humidity is identical. Temperature controls the speed and quality of chlorophyll breakdown and terpene preservation.
After drying: the cure

You don't need premium equipment to dry well. A dark closet with a small fan and a hygrometer produces excellent results. The expensive gear is for consistency at scale — not for quality on a single harvest.
