Living soil is an organic growing method where you build a self-sustaining ecosystem in your container. Billions of microbes, fungi, and insects break down organic matter and feed nutrients directly to the roots. Your job shifts from mixing bottles to maintaining biology.
No-till takes it further: you never dump the pot. After harvest, chop the stalk, drop a new seed or clone, and top-dress. The soil gets richer with every cycle.
Why growers love it
- Water only. Once the soil is built and amended, you water with plain dechlorinated water for the entire grow. No pH adjusting. No mixing nutrients. No runoff.
- Terpene quality. Many growers report fuller, more complex terpene profiles from living soil compared to salt-fed grows. The entourage of micro-nutrients and organic acids is hard to replicate in a bottle.
- Sustainability. The soil is reused forever (no-till), or recycled and re-amended. No bottled nutrient waste.
- Simplicity (once built). The hardest part is the initial build. After that, it's the easiest growing method.
Building a living soil mix
The classic recipe (Coots mix / BuildASoil 3.0 style):
Base (equal parts by volume):
- Sphagnum peat moss (or coco coir) — the structural backbone.
- Aeration — perlite, pumice, or rice hulls. 30% of total volume.
- Compost / worm castings — the biology engine. High-quality EWC is non-negotiable.
Amendments (per cubic foot of base):

The cook
After mixing, moisten the soil to wringing-wet-sponge level and let it sit (covered, not sealed) for 3–4 weeks. This "cooking" period lets the microbes colonize and start breaking down the amendments. If you plant too early, the initial breakdown can burn roots.
The soil should smell earthy and alive after cooking — like a forest floor. If it smells sour or like ammonia, it needs more time and air.
Container size matters
Living soil needs volume for biology to thrive:
- Minimum: 7 gallons per plant (tight, will need more top-dressing).
- Good: 10–15 gallons per plant.
- Ideal: 20–30 gallon beds or shared raised beds (the bigger the soil web, the more stable the system).
Small pots (3–5 gal) don't give biology enough room. If you're in a 2x4 tent, a single 15–20 gallon fabric bed running 2 plants is better than two 7-gallon pots.
No-till: the infinite cycle
After harvest:
- Chop the plant at the stalk (leave roots in the soil — they become food for biology).
- Top-dress with fresh worm castings + dry amendments (¼ of the original recipe amounts).
- Add mulch — straw, barley straw, or leaf mulch on top.
- Water in the top-dress and wait 1–2 weeks.
- Plant a new seed or clone directly into the same soil.
Each cycle the soil improves. The root channels from the last plant become air pathways. The decomposing roots feed the next generation of microbes. By cycle 3–4, the soil is better than anything you can buy.
Cover crops & mulch
Living soil should never be bare on top:
- Mulch: Straw or barley straw, 2–3 inches deep. Retains moisture, feeds soil life, prevents the top from crusting.
- Cover crops: Clover, alfalfa, or barley sprouted on the soil surface. They fix nitrogen, prevent compaction, and add organic matter when chopped and dropped.
Cover crops are optional but transform the system. A 30-gallon bed with clover ground cover looks like a tiny forest floor.
Watering living soil
- Dechlorinated water only. Chlorine/chloramine kills soil biology. Let tap water sit out 24 hours, or use a carbon filter.
- No pH adjusting. The soil biology buffers pH naturally. Trying to pH your water in living soil can disrupt the system.
- Water slowly and evenly. No dry spots, no standing water. The mulch helps distribute moisture.
- Watch the weight. Lift the pot — water when it feels light. Living soil in big pots may only need watering every 3–5 days.
Teas and top-dresses (the only "feeding" you'll do)
- Compost tea: Aerated worm casting tea adds a burst of biology. Brew 24–48 hours with an air pump, apply every 2–4 weeks.
- Malted barley top-dress: Sprouted barley grain (ground) activates enzymes that release locked nutrients. Sprinkle on the soil surface every 2 weeks.
- Aloe vera drench: Fresh aloe vera blended into water — a natural root stimulant full of saponins and salicylic acid.
Common mistakes
- Not cooking the soil. Planting into freshly mixed soil burns roots from the initial nitrogen flush.
- Too-small containers. Under 7 gallons, the biology can't sustain itself through a full grow.
- Overwatering. Living soil in big pots stays wet longer than you think. Lift, don't schedule.
- Using chlorinated water. The chlorine in city tap water kills the microbes you spent weeks building.
- Trying to "fix" pH. The soil handles it. Adding pH-down acidifies the root zone and kills biology.
