You're feeding your plant a premium nutrient line. The labels say everything's covered. But the leaves look sick — yellowing, spots, purple stems, burnt tips. You add more nutrients. It gets worse.
The problem isn't what you're feeding. It's that the plant can't access it. The pH is wrong, and no amount of extra nutrients will fix a pH problem. This is nutrient lockout, and it's the most common invisible killer in cannabis cultivation.
What is nutrient lockout?
Every essential nutrient has a pH range where it's soluble and available to roots. Outside that range, the nutrient precipitates out of solution or binds to soil particles, becoming chemically unavailable — even though it's technically present.
The plant shows deficiency symptoms, you think it needs more food, you add more, the excess salts push pH further out of range, and the cycle accelerates. This is why "more nutes" is almost never the right first response to deficiency symptoms.
The pH availability chart
This is the single most important chart in cannabis growing:

The sweet spot:
- Soil: 6.0–6.8 (optimal: 6.3–6.5)
- Coco coir: 5.5–6.3 (optimal: 5.8–6.0)
- Hydro/DWC: 5.5–6.3 (optimal: 5.8–6.0)
At pH 6.3 in soil, essentially every nutrient is available. At pH 4.5 or pH 8.0, half the menu is locked out.
How to diagnose lockout
Step 1: check your runoff
Water the plant to 10–15% runoff and measure the runoff pH and EC.

Step 2: match symptoms to the locked-out nutrient
The deficiency symptoms you see tell you which nutrients are locked out, which tells you whether pH is too high or too low:
Low pH lockout (below 5.5) — common symptoms:
- Calcium deficiency: brown spots on new growth, curled leaf tips
- Magnesium deficiency: interveinal yellowing on middle leaves
- Phosphorus deficiency: dark leaves with purple petioles, slow growth
High pH lockout (above 7.0) — common symptoms:
- Iron deficiency: bright yellow new growth with green veins
- Manganese deficiency: yellow spots between veins on new leaves
- Zinc deficiency: small, twisted new leaves, short internodes

Step 3: rule out other causes
Before you blame pH, confirm:
- You're actually checking pH with a calibrated meter (cheap pH pens drift — calibrate weekly)
- You're not massively over- or underwatering (both cause symptoms that look like deficiencies)
- The root zone isn't too cold (below 60°F kills nutrient uptake regardless of pH)
How to fix lockout
The corrective flush
This is the reset button:
- Mix plain water at the correct pH for your medium (6.3 for soil, 5.8 for coco/hydro)
- Run it through the pot at 2–3× the pot volume. A 5-gallon pot gets 10–15 gallons of water
- Measure the last runoff — the pH should now be close to your input pH. If it's still way off, run more water through
- Let the medium dry back to the appropriate level before resuming feeding
- Resume feeding at 50% strength with correctly pH'd solution
Recovery timeline

Damaged leaves don't heal. The existing spots, yellowing, and burns are permanent on those leaves. Recovery shows in new growth. Don't keep flushing because old damage is still visible — that's the plant's scar tissue, not an ongoing problem.
How to prevent lockout
Always pH your water
This is non-negotiable in any medium except living soil (which self-buffers if built correctly).
Tools you need:
- A digital pH pen ($15–30 for a decent one)
- pH Up (potassium hydroxide) and pH Down (phosphoric acid)
- Calibration solution (pH 7.0 and 4.0 packets)
The routine:
- Mix your nutrients into the water
- Let it sit for 5 minutes (nutrient interaction changes pH)
- Measure the pH
- Adjust with pH Up or pH Down as needed
- Water the plant
Alternate pH in the target range
Instead of hitting the exact same pH every time, alternate within the range:
- Soil: alternate between 6.2 and 6.8
- Coco: alternate between 5.6 and 6.2
This ensures that every nutrient gets an optimal window during the grow. If you always water at exactly 6.0, some nutrients at the edges of their availability range get starved over time.
Don't chase runoff pH with extreme adjustments
If your runoff pH is 5.0 and you want it at 6.3, don't water at pH 8.0 to compensate. That shock is worse than the problem. Water at 6.5 and let the runoff gradually correct over 2–3 waterings. Soil biology needs gradual pH shifts, not chemical shocks.
Calibrate your pH pen regularly
A drifted pH pen is the same as having no pH pen. Calibrate at least every 2 weeks using 7.0 and 4.0 reference solutions. If the pen won't calibrate within 0.2 of the reference, replace it.
Monitor EC alongside pH
EC (electrical conductivity) tells you the total dissolved salts in your solution and runoff. High EC = high salt concentration = pH instability. Keep input EC within the recommended range for your nutrient line and medium.
Medium-specific pH guidance
Soil
Soil has natural buffering capacity from organic matter, CEC (cation exchange capacity), and microbiology. It resists pH changes more than coco or hydro. This is forgiving for beginners but means problems build slowly and can be harder to detect.
Watch out for: peat-based mixes becoming acidic over time as the peat decomposes. A monthly runoff check catches this before symptoms appear.
Coco coir
Coco has its own CEC and preferentially holds calcium and magnesium on its exchange sites. Without pre-buffering (charging with cal-mag before use), coco steals Ca and Mg from your nutrient solution, causing lockout symptoms even at correct pH.
Always: use pre-buffered coco or buffer it yourself (soak in cal-mag + pH'd water overnight, then rinse).
Hydro (DWC, NFT, etc.)
Hydro is the most pH-sensitive medium because there's no buffer — the nutrient solution is the root zone. pH can swing wildly between reservoir changes.
Check pH daily in hydro. Top-off water should be pH'd. Reservoir changes every 7–10 days prevent drift and salt accumulation.
Living soil
Living soil is the exception. A well-built living soil with active microbiology self-regulates pH through microbial activity and organic acid production. If you're in true living soil (no-till, worm castings, cover crop), don't pH your water — the chlorine in pH'd tap water can harm the biology that's doing the buffering for you.
Use filtered or dechlorinated water and let the soil do its job.
The five-minute pH checklist
Before every watering:
- pH pen calibrated within the last 2 weeks
- Nutrients mixed into water first
- pH measured after nutrients settle (5 min)
- pH adjusted to target range for your medium
- EC checked (within range for growth stage)
That's it. This takes 5 minutes and prevents 80% of cannabis growing problems. It's not glamorous, but it's the highest-ROI habit in the hobby.
