Autoflower Cannabis: The Complete Growing Guide

Autoflowers don't care about your light schedule — they flower on their own timeline. How they work, optimal environment, feeding differences, training considerations, and the mistakes that cost autoflower growers the most yield.

Autoflowering cannabis strains flower based on age, not light cycle. While photoperiod strains need 12 hours of darkness to trigger flowering, autoflowers start flowering automatically 3–4 weeks after germination, regardless of how much light they receive. This makes them simpler to grow, faster to harvest, and more forgiving of light schedule mistakes — but they also have unique requirements that photoperiod experience doesn't always prepare you for.

How autoflowers work

The genetics

Autoflowering cannabis contains genetics from Cannabis ruderalis, a wild subspecies that evolved in northern latitudes (Russia, Central Asia) where summers are short. Ruderalis adapted by flowering based on age rather than day length — it couldn't wait for 12-hour nights that might never come before frost.

Modern autoflowers are hybrids: ruderalis genetics (for the auto-flowering trait) crossed with indica or sativa strains (for potency, flavor, and yield). The best modern autos produce results that are nearly indistinguishable from photoperiod strains in quality, though yields are typically 20–40% less per plant.

Total: 8–12 weeks seed to harvest. Most modern autos finish in 9–10 weeks. Compare to photoperiod strains at 14–20+ weeks (4–8 weeks veg + 8–12 weeks flower). The speed is the primary advantage.

Light schedule

The recommendation: 20/4

Run lights 20 hours on, 4 hours off for the entire grow — from seed to harvest.

Why 20/4 instead of 24/0:

  • The 4 hours of darkness lets the plant recover and process sugars produced during the light period
  • Electricity savings (17% less power than 24/0)
  • Equipment runs cooler with 4 hours off daily
  • DLI (daily light integral) at 20 hours of quality light is sufficient for maximum photosynthesis

Why not 18/6 or 12/12:

  • 18/6 works fine and saves more power, but you're leaving ~10% potential growth on the table by reducing light hours
  • 12/12 works (autos will flower regardless) but significantly reduces yield — the plant gets 40% less light energy per day than at 20/4

Nutrient feeding

Start light, stay moderate

Autoflowers are generally lighter feeders than photoperiod strains. Their smaller size and shorter life cycle mean less total nutrient consumption, and they're more sensitive to overfeeding — especially in the first 2–3 weeks.

When to switch to bloom nutrients

Autoflowers don't have a clear veg-to-flower transition triggered by a light change. Instead, watch for pre-flowers (small pistils appearing at the nodes, usually around week 3–4). When you see pistils, begin transitioning to bloom nutrients over the next 5–7 days. Don't switch abruptly — the plant is still stretching and growing when pre-flowers first appear.

Cal-mag

Autos in coco need cal-mag from the start, just like photoperiod plants. In soil, cal-mag is usually unnecessary unless using RO water or LEDs. See our cal-mag guide.

Container size

3–5 gallons is the sweet spot for autoflowers.

  • 1–2 gallons: too small. Root-bound autos yield significantly less — the root restriction caps the plant's potential during its short life
  • 3 gallons: good for smaller autos (Lowryder, Easy Bud) or tight spaces
  • 5 gallons: optimal for most modern autos (Mephisto, Night Owl, FastBuds varieties). Enough root space for full potential without wasted medium
  • 7+ gallons: diminishing returns. The plant usually doesn't fill the root space before it's done

Don't transplant autoflowers

This is the single biggest difference from photoperiod growing. Plant autoflower seeds directly in their final container.

Transplanting stresses the plant. Photoperiod strains recover because they have unlimited veg time — they just pause growth for a few days and continue. Autoflowers are on a fixed clock. Every day of transplant stress is a day of lost growth that can't be recovered by extending veg. A 2-day transplant stall in a 10-week lifecycle is 3% of the plant's entire life.

If you must start in a smaller container (seedling plug or solo cup), transplant before week 2 — before the auto-flower signal triggers. After pre-flowers appear, transplanting is off the table.

Training autoflowers

What works

  • LST (Low Stress Training): the best training method for autos. Bend and tie down branches to create an even canopy. Start in week 2–3 when the plant is flexible. LST doesn't stress the plant enough to trigger a growth pause
  • Leaf tucking: tuck large fan leaves under branches instead of removing them. Gets light to lower bud sites without the stress of defoliation

What works with caution

  • Light defoliation: removing a few large fan leaves that block light to bud sites is fine — but do it gradually. Remove 2–3 leaves at a time, wait 2 days, assess, and remove more if needed. Never strip an autoflower like you would a photoperiod plant
  • Topping: controversial. Topping an autoflower works IF you do it early (before the 4th node, during week 2–3) AND the plant is growing vigorously. The recovery time from topping costs growth, and a slow-growing auto may not recover before flowering starts. If in doubt, don't top — LST alone produces excellent results

What to avoid

  • Mainlining / manifolding: too many stress events, too much recovery time. By the time the manifold structure is established, the auto is already flowering
  • Heavy defoliation (schwazzing): aggressive defoliation that photoperiod plants recover from in 3–5 days can stunt an auto permanently
  • Supercropping in flower: breaking and bending stems is high-stress. In a photoperiod plant, the 5-day recovery is insignificant. In an auto, it's directly lost bud development time

Genetics matter more with autos

Autoflower genetics have improved dramatically in recent years, but quality varies more than in the photoperiod market. Premium breeders produce autos that rival photoperiod quality. Budget seeds from unknown breeders are much more likely to produce runts, herms, or low-potency plants.

Auto strains in our strain library

Many strains in our strain directory have autoflower versions. Look for the "Auto" suffix in the strain name. Each auto profile includes specific growing notes.

Autoflower advantages

  1. Speed: 8–12 weeks seed to harvest. You can run 3–4 cycles per year indoors
  2. Simplicity: no light schedule change, no worrying about light leaks causing herms
  3. Stealth: smaller plants fit in tight spaces (closets, small tents, balconies)
  4. Perpetual harvest: because light schedule doesn't matter, you can run autos at different stages in the same tent. Start a new seed every 3 weeks and harvest every 3 weeks
  5. Outdoor flexibility: autos can be planted anytime during the growing season (May–August in WNY) regardless of day length

Autoflower limitations

  1. Lower yield per plant: a typical auto yields 1–4 oz. A well-grown photoperiod plant yields 3–8+ oz indoors
  2. No veg extension: if something goes wrong early (overwatering, nutrient burn), you can't extend veg to let the plant recover
  3. No cloning: clones from an autoflower flower immediately at the same age as the mother. You can't maintain a mother plant or run clones
  4. Less training time: the fixed timeline limits how much you can shape the plant before it flowers
  5. Genetics lottery: autoflower seeds are less uniform than photoperiod seeds. Two seeds from the same pack may produce plants of significantly different sizes

Common mistakes

  1. Transplanting — plant in the final container from the start. Transplant stress in autos is unrecoverable lost time
  2. Overfeeding early — autos are small in weeks 1–3 and don't need much. Feed at 25–50% strength until you see vigorous growth
  3. Running 12/12 light — autos flower regardless, so 12/12 just cuts your light energy in half. Use 20/4 or 18/6
  4. Heavy training too late — any training done after pre-flowers appear directly reduces bud development time. Get training done by week 3
  5. Comparing yields to photoperiod — a single auto yielding 2 oz in 10 weeks isn't worse than a photoperiod yielding 4 oz in 16 weeks. The auto is more efficient per-day-of-light. Run the numbers on grams per watt per day, not total grams per plant
  6. Choosing cheap genetics — this is the one place not to budget. Premium auto seeds cost $5–10 more per seed but the difference in reliability, potency, and yield is enormous
