"Just add cal-mag" is the most common advice in cannabis growing forums. Plant looks weird? Cal-mag. Spots on the leaves? Cal-mag. Slow growth? Cal-mag. It's become the grower's aspirin — thrown at every symptom regardless of the actual cause.
Sometimes it's the right call. Calcium and magnesium are secondary macronutrients that cannabis uses in significant quantities, and certain growing conditions create genuine deficiencies. But unnecessary cal-mag supplementation can cause its own problems: nutrient lockout, salt buildup, and masking the real issue.
When you actually need cal-mag
Growing in coco coir
Coco ALWAYS needs supplemental cal-mag. This is not optional.
Coco coir has cation exchange sites that preferentially bind calcium and magnesium ions from the nutrient solution. The coco literally steals Ca and Mg from your feed before the plant can absorb them. Even if your base nutrients contain calcium and magnesium, the coco takes its share first.
Dose: 1–2 mL/L of cal-mag (like General Hydroponics CaliMagic or Botanicare Cal-Mag Plus) in every feeding throughout the entire grow.
Using RO or distilled water
Reverse osmosis (RO) water and distilled water contain zero minerals. Most base nutrient formulas assume your water provides some calcium and magnesium naturally. When you use mineral-free water, the base nutrients alone may not supply enough.
Dose: 0.5–1 mL/L cal-mag to replace what the water would normally contribute.
Using LED grow lights
This one is debated, but there's a pattern: growers under LED lights report more calcium and magnesium deficiency than growers under HPS. The hypothesis is that LED's spectrum and efficiency cause faster growth, increasing calcium demand beyond what the feed provides. Whether it's the light spectrum or just faster growth, the practical observation is consistent.
Dose: 0.5–1 mL/L if you see early cal-mag symptoms under LEDs, even in soil.
Growing in hydro (DWC)
DWC nutrient solutions are entirely synthetic — whatever you add is all the plant gets. Some base nutrient lines (General Hydroponics Flora series, for example) include calcium and magnesium in the Micro component. Others may be borderline for cannabis's high demand.
Dose: 0.5–1 mL/L if using a base nutrient line that's not cannabis-specific. Check if your base nutrients already contain Ca and Mg before adding more.
When you probably DON'T need cal-mag
Growing in soil with tap water
Good soil (Fox Farms Ocean Forest, Roots Organics, living soil) contains calcium from dolomite lime and magnesium from amendments. Most tap water contains 30–150 PPM of calcium and some magnesium. Together, soil + tap water usually provides adequate cal-mag without supplementation.
Exception: if your tap water is very soft (below 50 PPM total), cal-mag may be needed even in soil.
Using a cannabis-specific nutrient line
Nutrient lines designed for cannabis (Canna, Advanced Nutrients, General Hydroponics Flora series in the recommended ratios) include calcium and magnesium in their formulations. Adding cal-mag on top can push calcium too high, locking out other nutrients.
Check the label: look for the Guaranteed Analysis on your nutrient bottles. If calcium is listed at 3%+ and magnesium at 1%+, you probably don't need additional cal-mag.
When the problem is actually pH
This is the big one. Calcium becomes unavailable below pH 6.0 in soil. A plant at pH 5.5 shows calcium deficiency symptoms — brown spots, stunted new growth — even if calcium is abundant in the medium. Adding more calcium doesn't fix a pH problem. Fixing the pH does.
Before adding cal-mag, check your pH. If your feed or runoff pH is below 6.0 (soil) or below 5.5 (coco/hydro), fix the pH first. The "deficiency" may resolve itself.
Identifying calcium vs. magnesium deficiency
Cal-mag products contain both nutrients, but the symptoms are different:
Calcium deficiency
- Where: new growth (upper leaves). Calcium is immobile in the plant — it can't be moved from old leaves to new ones
- Symptoms: brown spots on new leaves, distorted or stunted new growth, curled leaf tips, hollow stems
- Timing: develops over days. New leaves emerge damaged
Magnesium deficiency
- Where: lower/older leaves. Magnesium is mobile — the plant pulls it from old leaves to feed new growth
- Symptoms: interveinal chlorosis — the veins stay green while the leaf tissue between them turns yellow. Classic "striped" look
- Timing: lower leaves yellow first, progresses upward
The overlap
Cal-mag products treat both simultaneously, which is fine for most situations. If you can identify which nutrient is actually deficient, you can supplement specifically:
- Calcium only: calcium chloride foliar spray (fastest fix)
- Magnesium only: Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) — 1 tsp per gallon of water as a drench or foliar spray

By growth stage
- Seedling: none or very light (0.5 mL/L). Seedlings don't need much calcium or magnesium yet
- Veg: standard dose for your medium. Calcium demand is moderate during vegetative growth
- Early flower (weeks 1–3): maintain veg dose. The stretch increases calcium demand
- Mid flower (weeks 4–6): slightly reduce or maintain. Some growers reduce cal-mag when PK boosters are added (to avoid calcium-phosphorus interaction)
- Late flower (weeks 7+): reduce or stop. The plant's nutritional needs are declining
Mixing order
If you're also using silica (potassium silicate), the mixing order matters:
- Water
- Silica (first — it's highly alkaline)
- Base nutrients
- Cal-mag (after base nutrients)
- Other supplements
- pH adjustment (last)
Cal-mag added before the base nutrients can interact with phosphorus in the solution, causing precipitate (cloudy solution with white particles). Adding it after the base minimizes this risk.

Note the nitrogen: most cal-mag products contain nitrogen (the first number in NPK). During flower, this extra nitrogen can contribute to nitrogen toxicity if you're already feeding bloom nutrients. If you need cal-mag during mid-to-late flower, choose a zero-nitrogen product like Canna Calmag Agent.
Common mistakes
- Adding cal-mag without checking pH first — pH lockout is the most common cause of calcium deficiency symptoms. If pH is off, adding more calcium doesn't help — it makes the nutrient solution more concentrated while the lockout persists
- Using cal-mag in soil with tap water by default — soil + tap water usually provides sufficient calcium and magnesium. Only supplement if you see symptoms
- Overdosing cal-mag — excess calcium locks out magnesium, potassium, and iron. Excess magnesium locks out calcium. More isn't better — stick to recommended doses
- Using nitrogen-containing cal-mag in late flower — the extra nitrogen causes dark, clawed leaves (N toxicity) during a stage when the plant needs less nitrogen, not more
- Diagnosing every leaf spot as cal-mag deficiency — leaf spots can indicate pH problems, pest damage, nutrient burn, or several other issues. Verify with the symptom checklist before treating
