Environmental Controllers: Automating Temperature, Humidity, and CO₂

How to wire temperature, humidity, and CO₂ control into a single automated system — from basic timer combos to smart controllers that hold your environment within 2°F and 5% RH all day.

A grow light on a timer is automation level one. Most growers stop there and spend the rest of the cycle babysitting temperature and humidity manually — turning the exhaust fan up when it's hot, plugging in the humidifier when it's dry, unplugging the humidifier when the tent fogs up. That's not growing — that's being a thermostat with legs.

Environmental controllers replace the babysitting. They read temperature, humidity, and CO₂ in real time and activate equipment automatically to hold your targets. The difference between a manually managed tent and a controller-managed tent is the difference between a car with cruise control and one where you hold the gas pedal with your hand.

What controllers actually control

The four variables

A basic controller manages temperature and humidity. An advanced controller adds CO₂ management, light integration, and data logging.

The control loop

Every controller runs the same logic:

  1. Read the sensor (temp, RH, CO₂ PPM)
  2. Compare the reading to your set point
  3. Activate equipment if the reading is outside the dead band
  4. Wait (the cycle delay — typically 30–120 seconds)
  5. Repeat

The dead band is the range around your set point where the controller does nothing. If your target temperature is 78°F with a 2°F dead band, the controller ignores readings between 76°F and 80°F. Without a dead band, equipment cycles on and off constantly (short cycling), which wears out compressors and relays.

Controller tiers

Tier 1: Smart outlet controllers ($30–80)

What they are: a single device with a built-in sensor and one or two controllable outlets. You plug equipment into the outlet, set a target, and the controller switches the outlet on/off based on the sensor reading.

Examples:

  • Inkbird ITC-308 — temperature only. Two outlets: one for heating, one for cooling. Plug a heater into the heating outlet and an exhaust fan (or AC) into the cooling outlet. Set high and low limits. The Inkbird turns on the appropriate device when the temp drifts outside range
  • Inkbird IHC-200 — humidity only. Same concept: one outlet for humidifier, one for dehumidifier
