Grow Room Automation: Controllers, Timers, and Smart Monitoring

From basic outlet timers to full environmental controllers — how to automate your grow so the room runs itself while you sleep. What to automate, what not to, and equipment at every budget.

The best grows are the most consistent grows, and humans are terrible at consistency. We forget to turn lights on, we leave the exhaust fan off, we water at random times. The plants don't care about your schedule — they want the same conditions, every day, without variation.

Automation solves this. At the most basic level, a $10 timer runs your lights on a perfect 18/6 or 12/12 schedule without fail. At the advanced end, a full environmental controller maintains temperature, humidity, CO₂, and watering while you check in once a day from your phone.

This guide covers what to automate, in what order, at every budget.

What to automate (in order of priority)

1. Lighting schedule (mandatory)

No cannabis grower should be manually switching lights. A timer is the single most important piece of automation.

Why: photoperiod cannabis depends on a precise light cycle to trigger and maintain flowering. A 12/12 schedule that occasionally becomes 13/11 or 14/10 because you forgot can cause the plant to reveg or produce hermaphrodite flowers. Consistency isn't optional.

What to use:

  • Mechanical outlet timer ($5–10): the classic chunky timer with tabs you push in. Reliable, no programming needed, no batteries. The best value in all of growing
  • Digital outlet timer ($10–20): more precise (minute-level vs. 15-minute increments on mechanical). Useful for the sunset/sunrise technique or odd schedules
  • Smart plug with scheduling ($15–25): Kasa, Wemo, or similar. Control from your phone, set schedules, get notifications. The convenience is worth the small premium

Running your exhaust fan 24/7 at one speed wastes electricity and overdries the tent in dry climates. A controller lets you modulate airflow based on need.

Options:

  • Fan speed controller ($15–30): a dial that controls the fan motor speed. Simple, analog, reliable. Set it and adjust seasonally
  • Thermostat-controlled ($30–50): the fan ramps up when temperature rises and slows when it's cool. AC Infinity's Cloudline fans have this built in — the T-series controller sets target temp and humidity, and the fan speed adjusts automatically
  • Humidity-triggered ($30–50): same concept but triggered by humidity. Useful in flower when humidity management is critical

The recommendation: AC Infinity Cloudline fans (T4 for 2×4, T6 for 4×4) include a controller with temperature and humidity triggers out of the box. One purchase handles fan + controller + smart features. This is the single best value in grow equipment.

You can't manage what you can't measure. But you don't need to be in the tent to measure it — a WiFi sensor lets you check conditions from your phone, anytime.

Options:

  • Basic thermo-hygrometer ($10): shows current temp and humidity. You check it when you visit the tent. No history, no alerts
  • Data-logging sensor ($15–25): records highs, lows, and history. Some display this on the unit; better ones connect to a phone app
  • WiFi sensor (recommended) ($20–40): Govee H5075 or SensorPush. Real-time monitoring from your phone. Set alerts for high temp, low humidity, or other thresholds. See historical charts. Place 2 sensors (canopy level + floor level) for a complete picture

Why history matters: a snapshot temp reading tells you what it is right now. A 24-hour chart tells you that temps spike to 92°F at 2 PM when the sun hits your tent's wall, or that humidity drops to 35% when the heater kicks on at night. These patterns are invisible without data logging.

4. Watering (optional, huge time-saver)

Manual watering is the most labor-intensive part of growing. Automating it frees you from daily trips to the tent.

Options for soil/coco:

  • Gravity drip system ($15–30): a reservoir on a shelf above the plants with drip lines to each pot. Gravity does the work. No pump, no power. Adjust flow with inline valves. Simple and reliable for 2–4 plants
  • Pump-based drip system ($30–60): a small pump in a reservoir on a timer. Delivers precise amounts at set intervals. The Blumat system uses ceramic sensors that water only when the soil dries to a set point — no timer needed, fully automatic
  • Automated fertigation ($100–300): a reservoir with a dosing pump that mixes nutrients, adjusts pH, and delivers on schedule. This is what commercial grows use. For home growers, the Autopot system (bottom-feed, gravity-driven, no pump or timer) is the most popular hands-off solution

For hydro/DWC:

  • Reservoir top-off ($20–40): a float valve in the reservoir maintains water level automatically from a connected container
  • pH/EC dosing ($200+): automatic pH and EC adjustment. Premium but eliminates daily reservoir checks

Warning: automated watering without monitoring is a recipe for flooding. Always use drip trays, check connections regularly, and have a way to detect leaks (a cheap water leak sensor, $10, can send an alert to your phone).

5. CO₂ (advanced, optional)

If you're supplementing CO₂, a controller is essential — you can't run CO₂ by feel.

What it does: a CO₂ controller (like the Autopilot APC8200 or similar) reads ambient CO₂ with a sensor and opens/closes a solenoid valve on a CO₂ tank to maintain a target PPM. It also coordinates with your exhaust fan — exhaust pulls CO₂ out, so the fan should be off during CO₂ injection.

Cost: $150–300 for the controller + sensor. Worth it only if you're already running high PPFD (900+ µmol) and have the environment dialed in. See our CO₂ guide for when supplementation actually helps.

Environmental controllers: the all-in-one option

For growers who want a single device managing everything, environmental controllers combine multiple automation functions.

Budget tier ($50–100)

  • Inkbird ITC-308 ($35): a thermostat that controls a heater and cooler outlet based on temperature setpoints. Dead simple. Plug the heater into the "heat" outlet and the AC or exhaust into the "cool" outlet. The controller runs whichever is needed
  • Inkbird IHC-200 ($30): same concept for humidity — controls a humidifier and dehumidifier

These are single-function controllers, but they're extremely reliable and cheap. Two Inkbirds (one for temp, one for humidity) give you solid environmental control for $65.

Mid tier ($100–300)

  • AC Infinity Controller 69/69 Pro ($100–180): manages multiple AC Infinity fans, monitors temp/humidity/VPD, has app-based control and scheduling. The best value for growers already using AC Infinity equipment
  • TrolMaster Hydro-X ($150–300): modular controller with plug-and- play sensors. Controls lights, fans, CO₂, humidifier/dehumidifier, and irrigation. Popular with serious home growers

Premium tier ($300+)

  • TrolMaster Hydro-X Pro ($300–500): full-featured environmental controller with app monitoring, multi-zone support, and data logging
  • Pulse One ($250): primarily a sensor (temp, humidity, VPD, light, CO₂ optional) with an excellent app and data logging. Doesn't control equipment directly but provides the data to optimize your setup

Smart home integration

If you already use smart home gear, your grow can plug into it:

  • Smart plugs (Kasa, Wemo) with scheduling for lights and fans
  • Smart power strips for controlling multiple devices from one app
  • IFTTT or Home Assistant integrations to chain events (if temperature exceeds 85°F → turn on exhaust fan to max, send notification)
  • WiFi cameras — a cheap Wyze cam ($25) in the tent lets you check on plants from your phone. Useful for monitoring plant health between visits

The caveat: smart home gear requires WiFi. If your internet goes down, smart plugs may or may not retain their schedules (check the specific product — Kasa plugs retain schedules offline; some others don't). For lighting, a mechanical timer as backup is cheap insurance.

What NOT to automate

Don't automate plant inspection

No camera or sensor replaces flipping a leaf and checking the undersides for pests, or squeezing a bud to check for mold inside. Visual, hands-on inspection is a daily requirement that can't be delegated to technology.

Don't automate before you understand manual

If you haven't grown a plant to harvest using manual watering, manual pH adjustment, and manual environment monitoring, you don't have the baseline knowledge to diagnose problems when automation fails. And it will fail — a drip line clogs, a sensor drifts, a timer loses its schedule. The grower who understands the manual process can spot the failure. The grower who never watered by hand won't know what "wrong" looks like.

Don't over-complicate a simple grow

A single plant in a 2×2 tent doesn't need a $300 environmental controller, automated fertigation, and CO₂ supplementation. A $10 timer and a $15 hygrometer are all the automation a first grow needs. Add automation one piece at a time as your grows get more complex.

Start at the bottom. Move up only when the current level becomes a bottleneck. Most home growers never need to go past level 2 or 3.
