Cloning lets you copy a great plant. A mother plant lets you copy it forever. Instead of hunting through seeds hoping to find the same phenotype twice (which never happens — every seed is genetically unique), you keep one exceptional plant alive in perpetual vegetative state and take cuttings from it whenever you need a new round.
One healthy mother can supply 10–30 clones per cycle, indefinitely. The clones are genetically identical to the mother and to each other: same potency, same terpene profile, same growth habit, same flowering time. No surprises.

Selecting the mother
The mother plant is the genetic blueprint for every clone you'll grow from here on. This decision is worth investing time in.
The pheno hunt
If you're starting from seed, you need to grow out multiple plants, flower them, and evaluate the results before picking your mother. This is called a "pheno hunt."
The process:
- Grow 4–10 seeds of the strain you want to keep
- Take clones from each plant before flipping to flower (label them meticulously — Plant A clone, Plant B clone, etc.). Keep these clones in veg while the originals flower
- Flower the originals and evaluate:
- Potency (smoke test — there's no substitute)
- Terpene profile (smell and taste)
- Yield (total dry weight per plant)
- Bud structure (density, bag appeal, frost)
- Flowering time (shorter is more efficient)
- Pest/mold resistance (did it handle issues better than siblings?)
- Growth habit (does it respond well to training?)
- Pick the winner — the plant that scores highest across all criteria
- The clone of the winner becomes your mother. The other clones can be discarded or given away
What makes a good mother
Not every phenotype makes a good mother, even if it produces great flower. The ideal mother also:
- Branches vigorously — more branching = more clone sites per cycle. A leggy, single-cola plant makes a poor mother because you can't harvest many cuttings without damaging it
- Recovers quickly from cutting — after you take clones, the mother should bounce back within a week and start filling out again. Some phenotypes are resilient; others stall after cutting
- Stays healthy in veg indefinitely — a mother will live in veg for months or years. She needs to tolerate the low-stress conditions of a maintenance veg without declining
- Clones root easily — some phenotypes root in 5 days; others take 14+. Consistent, fast rooting saves time and reduces failure rates
