Vegetative feeding is simple: give the plant nitrogen and it grows leaves. Flowering feeding is where most growers lose yield. The plant's nutritional needs change dramatically and rapidly across 8–10 weeks of flower — from nitrogen-hungry stretch to phosphorus-demanding bud development to the final fade where you're managing decline, not growth.
Get it right and you harvest dense, frosty, fully-developed buds. Get it wrong and you get airy popcorn, burnt tips, or locked-out plants that limp to the finish line.
The three phases of flower feeding
Phase 1: The stretch (weeks 1–3)
The plant isn't really "flowering" yet — it's growing aggressively, stretching vertically, and building the framework that will hold buds. Nutritional needs during the stretch are closer to late veg than to flower.
What the plant needs:
- Nitrogen: still moderate-high. The plant is building new stems, branches, and leaves at the fastest rate of the entire cycle. Cutting nitrogen too early stunts the stretch and reduces the number of bud sites
- Phosphorus: beginning to increase. Flower sites are forming at every node
- Potassium: moderate. Potassium demand ramps up later
- Calcium/Magnesium: steady. The rapid growth demands consistent cal-mag, especially in coco
The mistake most growers make: switching to "bloom" nutrients on day one of 12/12. Bloom formulas are high-P, low-N — exactly wrong for the stretch. The plant needs nitrogen NOW. It'll need phosphorus later.
The play: continue your veg nutrient ratio for the first 7–10 days of flower, then begin transitioning to bloom ratios. Many experienced growers run their veg base at 75% + bloom base at 25% during weeks 1–2, then shift to 50/50 by week 3.
Phase 2: Bud development (weeks 3–7)
This is the main event. Buds are forming, swelling, and packing on weight. The plant's nutritional priorities shift hard toward phosphorus and potassium.
What the plant needs:
- Nitrogen: reduced. The plant has built its canopy — it doesn't need more leaves. Excess nitrogen during bud development pushes leafy growth into the buds (airy, leafy buds instead of dense nugs) and can reduce terpene and resin production
- Phosphorus: high. Phosphorus drives flower formation, seed development (which the plant is attempting even in sensimilla), and energy transfer within the plant
- Potassium: high. Potassium regulates water transport, enzyme activation, and sugar production. Heavy K demand during this phase
- Sulfur: moderate but important. Sulfur contributes to terpene synthesis. Many bloom boosters include sulfur for this reason
- Calcium/Magnesium: steady to slightly increased
Typical NPK ratio: something in the range of 1-3-3 or 1-3-4 (N-P-K). The specific numbers depend on your nutrient line, but the ratio is consistent: low N, high P, high K.
