You've made it through the stretch, the bulk-up phase, and the mid-flower nutrient demands. Your plant is covered in frosty, swelling buds. Now comes the hardest part of growing cannabis: not cutting it down too early.
Late flower (roughly weeks 7–10 for most strains, 9–12+ for long- flowering sativas) is where potency, density, bag appeal, and terpene complexity reach their peak — but only if you let the plant finish on its own schedule. This guide covers what's happening in the plant during these final weeks and what you should (and shouldn't) be doing.
What's happening in the plant
Weeks 7–8: the swell
This is typically the last major growth phase. Calyxes are stacking, buds are fattening visibly day by day, and trichome production is ramping up. The buds are gaining the final 20–30% of their dry weight during these two weeks.
What to watch for:
- Pistils are mostly white with some starting to recede and turn orange/amber. If 90%+ of pistils are still white, you have significant time left
- Trichomes are predominantly clear to milky under magnification
- Fan leaves may begin to yellow from the bottom up — this is normal and expected as the plant cannibalizes stored nutrients for bud production
- Buds feel dense when squeezed but still have give
Weeks 8–9: the ripen
Growth slows. The plant shifts from building new calyxes to ripening existing ones. Trichome heads swell with cannabinoid-rich resin. This is the highest-value period — rushing through it is the most common mistake in home growing.
What to watch for:
- Pistils are 50–70% orange/amber and have curled back into the buds
- Trichomes transitioning from clear → milky (cloudy). This is when THC concentration is building
- More fan leaves yellowing and dropping — the plant is pulling mobile nutrients from leaves to fuel bud ripening
- Bud aroma reaches peak intensity
Weeks 9–10+: the finish line
The final ripening stage. Most of the calyx swelling is done. The plant is now focused on resin production and terpene development.
What to watch for:
- Trichomes are mostly milky with 10–30% amber (the harvest window — see below)
- Pistils are 70–90% orange/amber and fully receded
- Some lower fan leaves have dropped completely
- Buds feel rock-hard and dense
- Foxtailing may appear on the top colas (strain-dependent — some strains naturally foxtail; light-stress foxtailing is different)
