Watering in veg is forgiving — the plant is growing fast, roots are expanding, and minor mistakes get absorbed. Flower is different. The root system is mature, transpiration rates fluctuate with bud load, and overwatering in late flower is one of the most common causes of bud rot.
This guide covers how watering changes across flower and how to read what the plant is telling you.
Why flower is different
In veg, the plant is building mass — stems, leaves, roots. Water demand increases steadily as the plant grows. In flower, three things change:
- Root growth slows — the plant redirects energy to bud production
- Transpiration fluctuates — heavy bud loads increase demand, but dense canopies reduce airflow around the pot
- Nutrient ratios shift — the plant needs more P and K, which changes EC and pH dynamics in the root zone
The result: watering schedules that worked perfectly in veg often need adjustment around week 3 of flower.
The dry-back method
The most reliable way to water in flower — any medium, any container.
How it works
- Water to 10–20% runoff (pour slowly until liquid exits the drain holes)
- Wait for the dry-back — let the medium dry to a specific point before watering again
- Repeat — the cycle is water → dry → water → dry
How dry is "dry enough"?

The lift test: pick up (or nudge) the pot. After a few waterings, you'll learn what "fully saturated" and "ready to water" feel like by weight alone. This is the most reliable method regardless of medium.
Dry-back timing through flower

These are guidelines, not rules. Your plant, medium, pot size, temperature, and humidity all affect dry-back time. The lift test beats any schedule.
Runoff: what it tells you
Why collect runoff
Runoff carries information about what's happening in the root zone. By measuring the EC (conductivity) and pH of the runoff, you can catch problems early.
How to read runoff

Rule of thumb: if your runoff EC is more than 1.0 higher than your input EC, the root zone has excess salts. Do a flush with plain pH'd water at 2× pot volume, then resume feeding at a lower concentration.
Runoff volume
Aim for 10–20% runoff every watering. This prevents salt buildup without wasting nutrients. In coco, runoff is essential — coco holds cations (Ca, Mg, K) on exchange sites, and without runoff, the buffering shifts and nutrient availability changes.
In soil with dry amendments (organic), runoff is less important — you don't want to wash out your top-dressed amendments. Water just until the first drops appear, then stop.
Overwatering in flower
Why it's worse in flower
Overwatering in veg causes slow growth and sad, droopy leaves. In flower, overwatering creates two serious problems:
- Bud rot — excess humidity in the canopy + wet root zone = Botrytis heaven. Dense buds hold internal moisture; if the soil is also wet, the plant can't transpire and humidity around the buds climbs
- Root rot — Pythium thrives in anaerobic, waterlogged media. In flower, the plant can't outgrow damaged roots like it can in veg
Signs you're overwatering
- Leaves feel heavy and droop (not curling — flat drooping)
- The pot still feels heavy 3+ days after watering
- Lower leaves yellow and fall off faster than normal
- Fungus gnats appear (they breed in perpetually wet topsoil)
- The medium smells sour or swampy
The fix
- Stop watering until the pot feels light
- Increase airflow — add a fan below the canopy, increase exhaust
- If root rot is present (sour smell, brown roots), treat with hydrogen peroxide (3 ml of 3% H₂O₂ per liter of water) as a one-time drench
- Going forward, water less volume more frequently rather than flooding the pot
Underwatering in flower
Less common but equally harmful. A severely underwatered plant in flower will:
- Droop dramatically (leaves go limp and point down)
- Produce smaller, airier buds
- Develop premature senescence (early yellowing and leaf death)
- In extreme cases, force early finish — the plant rushes to seed
The fix: water immediately and thoroughly. The plant will recover in 30–60 minutes if it hasn't been dry too long. Chronic underwatering reduces yield more than almost any other factor.
Watering and flushing
The "flush" debate is covered in our flushing guide, but the watering angle is simple:
- Corrective flush (fixing salt buildup): 2× pot volume of plain pH'd water. This is a legitimate tool for fixing EC problems
- Pre-harvest flush (final 1–2 weeks of plain water): the science doesn't support improved flavor, but reducing nutrient input in the final week is common practice and doesn't hurt
Either way, don't flood the pot and leave it sitting in runoff. Drain saucers within 15 minutes. Standing water is the fastest path to root rot.
Medium-specific notes
Soil
Most forgiving medium. Soil buffers pH and holds nutrients. Water less frequently, ensure good drainage (at least 25% perlite), and rely on the lift test.
Coco coir
Coco dries faster than soil and should never fully dry out — the EC swings are harsh on roots. In flower, many coco growers water daily or even twice daily with low-concentration fertigation. Always water to runoff in coco.
Fabric pots
Fabric pots air-prune roots (preventing circling) and dry faster than plastic pots. They're excellent in flower — the increased oxygenation promotes healthy root function. Downside: they dry fast, so you'll water more frequently, especially in large tents with high PPFD.
The simple protocol
If everything above feels overwhelming, use this:
- Water when the pot feels light (lift test)
- Water slowly until 10–15% runoff
- Drain saucers within 15 minutes
- Check runoff EC once a week — if it's climbing, increase runoff percentage next watering
- In the last week, use plain pH'd water at half volume
That's it. Master the lift test and you'll avoid 90% of watering problems in flower.
