Foliar Feeding: When, Why, and How to Feed Through the Leaves

Plants can absorb nutrients through their leaves — faster than through roots in some situations. When foliar feeding is useful, what to spray, how to avoid burning leaves, and when to stop.

Foliar feeding — spraying a nutrient solution directly onto the leaves — is a supplemental feeding method, not a replacement for root feeding. The leaves can absorb water and dissolved minerals through their stomata (the tiny pores on the underside of leaves) and through the cuticle (the waxy outer layer).

It's faster than root uptake for certain nutrients. A calcium spray addresses a cal-mag deficiency in 24–48 hours; the same calcium through the roots might take 5–7 days to reach the affected leaves. But foliar feeding has strict rules — wrong concentration, wrong timing, or wrong stage can burn leaves and damage buds.

When foliar feeding is useful

Correcting deficiencies fast

The primary use case. When you see a nutrient deficiency developing (yellowing, spotting, discoloration), a foliar spray delivers the missing nutrient directly to the affected leaves while the root-zone correction catches up.

Common deficiency sprays:

Micronutrient supplementation

Some micronutrients (iron, manganese, zinc) are absorbed more efficiently through leaves than roots, especially when root-zone pH is slightly outside the optimal range for that nutrient.

IPM (pest management sprays)

Not technically "feeding," but many IPM sprays (neem oil, insecticidal soap, spinosad) are applied foliarly and can be combined with light nutrient sprays.

Seedling and clone support

Young seedlings and fresh clones have limited root systems. A light foliar mist of very dilute nutrients (1/4 strength) can support the plant while the roots develop.

How foliar feeding works

Stomatal absorption

Stomata are the pores on the underside of leaves that open and close to regulate gas exchange (CO₂ in, O₂ and water vapor out). When stomata are open, they can also absorb dissolved nutrients from droplets on the leaf surface.

Stomata are open:

  • During the light period (CO₂ absorption for photosynthesis)
  • In moderate temperatures (65–80°F)
  • In moderate humidity (40–70%)

Stomata are closed:

  • During darkness
  • In extreme heat (above 85°F) — the plant closes stomata to conserve water
  • In very low humidity — same conservation response

Cuticular absorption

The leaf cuticle (waxy outer layer) can absorb nutrients, but slowly. Surfactants (wetting agents) improve cuticular absorption by reducing the surface tension of the spray droplets, allowing better contact with the waxy surface.

How to foliar feed

Equipment

  • Pump sprayer ($10–15) — the manual pump-up garden sprayer is the standard. Get one with an adjustable nozzle for fine mist
  • Never use the same sprayer for pesticides and nutrients without thorough cleaning. Residual pesticide in a nutrient spray burns leaves

Preparation

  1. Mix the nutrient solution at 25–50% of the root-feeding strength. Leaf tissue is more sensitive than root tissue — full-strength nutrients on leaves will burn
  2. pH the solution to 5.8–6.2. Slightly acidic promotes stomatal absorption
  3. Add a surfactant (optional but recommended) — a drop of unscented liquid soap (Castile or Dr. Bronner's) per liter, or a commercial wetting agent like Coco-Wet. This breaks the surface tension so droplets spread evenly instead of beading up
  4. Water temperature: room temperature or slightly warm (65–75°F). Cold spray on warm leaves causes shock

Application

  1. Spray the undersides of the leaves. This is where the stomata are concentrated. Spraying only the top surface wastes most of the solution
  2. Fine mist, not dripping wet. You want even coverage, not puddles. If the leaves are dripping, you've applied too much
  3. Spray from below, angling upward. This naturally targets the undersides
  4. Cover all leaves. Move the sprayer around the plant to reach the interior leaves, not just the outer canopy

Timing

Best time to spray:

  • Early in the light cycle — stomata are open, the plant is actively photosynthesizing
  • Dim the lights or spray just after lights-on before the lights reach full intensity. Water droplets on leaves under intense light can act as lenses, concentrating light and causing localized burns
  • After dimming or before full intensity: spray, then wait 30–60 minutes for the leaves to dry before returning to full light

Do NOT spray:

  • During lights-off — stomata are closed; the nutrients sit on the leaf surface and can promote fungal growth
  • Under full-intensity light — burn risk from droplet lensing
  • In high humidity (>70%) — the spray won't dry, creating mold conditions

When to stop foliar feeding

Stop when buds form (week 2–3 of flower)

This is the hard rule. Once buds begin developing, foliar spraying risks:

  • Bud rot — moisture trapped in dense bud sites promotes Botrytis (gray mold)
  • Residue on buds — nutrient residue on the flower affects taste and safety. You don't want to smoke dissolved salts
  • Mildew — wet leaf surfaces in the humid microclimate around buds invite powdery mildew

Exception: IPM sprays (like BT for caterpillars) may be necessary during early flower. Apply early in the light cycle, use the absolute minimum volume, and ensure complete drying before lights-off.

After week 3 of flower, stop all foliar spraying. If a nutrient deficiency develops in mid to late flower, correct it through the root zone only.

What to spray (and not spray)

Good candidates for foliar feeding

  • Cal-mag solutions (for calcium/magnesium correction)
  • Epsom salt (for magnesium deficiency)
  • Kelp extract (growth hormones, micronutrients, stress relief)
  • Fulvic acid (chelator — improves nutrient availability on the leaf surface)
  • Silica (potassium silicate at half strength — strengthens leaves)
  • Compost tea (beneficial microbes, organic nutrients)
  • IPM treatments (neem, spinosad, insecticidal soap, BT)

Don't spray

  • Full-strength base nutrients — way too concentrated for leaves. Burns guaranteed
  • Phosphorus-heavy solutions — phosphorus is poorly absorbed through leaves and tends to leave residue
  • Anything with oil base during lights-on — oil-based sprays (like neem) should be applied during the last hour before lights- off or immediately after lights-on while intensity is low
  • Harsh chemicals — bleach, hydrogen peroxide at high concentrations, or synthetic pesticides not labeled for foliar use

Common mistakes

  1. Spraying at full nutrient strength — leaf tissue is more sensitive than roots. Always dilute to 25–50% of root feed strength
  2. Spraying buds — moisture on buds = mold risk + residue. Stop all foliar spraying by week 3 of flower
  3. Spraying under intense light — water droplets focus light and burn leaf tissue. Dim the light or spray during the low- intensity period
  4. Only spraying the tops of leaves — stomata are on the undersides. Spray from below
  5. Using foliar feeding as primary nutrition — leaves can't absorb enough nutrients to replace root feeding. Foliar is a supplement, not a substitute
