Grow Room Ventilation Design: CFM, Negative Pressure, and Duct Planning

How to calculate the right fan size for your grow room (with the actual CFM formula), why negative pressure matters, how duct length and bends reduce effective airflow, carbon filter sizing, and when you need intake fans vs. passive intakes.

Ventilation does four things in a grow room: exchanges CO2, removes heat, controls humidity, and scrubs odor. Get it wrong and everything else suffers — even a perfect light, perfect nutrients, and perfect genetics can't overcome stale, hot, humid air. Most growers buy an inline fan based on tent size and call it done, but understanding the airflow engineering helps you avoid the two most common problems: undersized fans that can't keep up with heat, and oversized fans that waste electricity and create too much negative pressure.

The CFM formula

CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) is the volume of air your fan moves. The baseline calculation:

Base CFM = room volume (cubic feet) × air exchanges per minute

Cannabis needs the entire room air replaced every 1–3 minutes:

Derating for real-world conditions

Base CFM assumes zero resistance. Real installations have resistance from carbon filters, ducting, bends, and altitude. Apply these multipliers:

Example: 4×4 tent (104 CFM base) with a carbon filter (×1.25) and two 90° bends (×1.05 × 1.05):

104 × 1.25 × 1.05 × 1.05 = 143 CFM needed

A 4-inch inline fan rated at 205 CFM (like the AC Infinity Cloudline T4) handles this comfortably with headroom for speed reduction.

When in doubt, go one size up. You can always turn a fan down (most have speed controllers), but you can't make a small fan move more air than its maximum rating.
