Hermaphrodites and Nanners: How to Prevent Seeded Buds

Your female plant just grew pollen sacs — or worse, tiny banana-shaped 'nanners' appeared inside the buds. What caused it, what it means for your harvest, and whether you can save the crop.

Cannabis is naturally dioecious — plants are either male or female. But under stress, female plants can produce male pollen structures (hermaphroditism) as a survival mechanism. The plant's logic: "I'm stressed and might die, so I'll pollinate myself to ensure seeds survive." The grower's problem: those seeds ruin the seedless (sinsemilla) flower you've spent months growing.

Understanding what triggers hermaphroditism — and knowing the difference between full hermaphrodites and late-flower nanners — determines whether you pull the plant or save the harvest.

Types of hermaphroditism

Full hermaphrodite (intersex)

The plant develops both male pollen sacs and female flowers, usually visible during early flower (weeks 1–3). Full hermaphrodites produce clusters of pollen sacs alongside or mixed with pistils, often at the nodes.

What to look for:

  • Pollen sacs: smooth, round, ball-shaped structures hanging from the nodes on short stems (like tiny bunches of grapes). Compare to female pre-flowers: pistils are tear-drop shaped with white hairs emerging
  • Mixed sex organs: both pistils AND pollen sacs on the same node
  • Timing: usually visible by the end of week 2 of flower

Cause: genetics (some strains are prone), or severe early-flower stress.

Action: remove the plant from the grow space immediately. A full hermaphrodite will pollinate itself and every other plant in the room. The pollen is viable and abundant. There is no saving it — a true hermaphrodite will continue producing pollen sacs.

Nanners (late-flower hermaphroditism)

"Nanners" (short for bananas) are exposed anthers — male pollen structures that emerge from inside female calyxes during mid-to-late flower. They look like small yellow or lime-green bananas poking out of the bud.

What to look for:

  • Small yellow or green banana-shaped structures protruding from inside the bud
  • Usually appear in the densest part of the cola
  • Sometimes hidden — you may find them only during inspection or trimming
  • Timing: typically weeks 5–8, most common in the last 2 weeks

Cause: stress (light leaks, heat, extended flowering time) or genetics.

Action: depends on timing and severity (see below).

What causes hermaphroditism

1. Light stress (the #1 cause)

Light leaks during the dark period are the most common trigger for hermaphroditism. Cannabis needs uninterrupted darkness during the 12-hour night period to maintain female flowering. Even brief light exposure (a grow room door opening, an LED indicator inside the tent, a street light through a window) can disrupt the photoperiod enough to trigger male flowers.

Prevention:

  • Seal your tent completely. Turn off all lights, close the tent, and wait 5 minutes for your eyes to adjust. If you see ANY light inside the tent, fix the source
  • Cover indicator lights on fans, power strips, and controllers with electrical tape
  • Never open the tent during the dark period. If you must, use a green headlamp (green light doesn't trigger photoperiod response, though this isn't 100% reliable)

2. Heat stress

Sustained canopy temperatures above 85°F during flower increase herm risk, especially in genetically sensitive strains. The combination of heat and light intensity is particularly dangerous.

Prevention:

  • Keep flower canopy temps between 72–80°F
  • Adequate ventilation and exhaust
  • Dim the light slightly if temps are consistently high

3. Genetics

Some strains are genetically predisposed to hermaphroditism. Historically, Thai and Haze genetics carry higher herm risk. Unstable crosses, bag seeds, and feminized seeds from stressed mother plants are more likely to herm than stable genetics from reputable breeders.

Prevention:

  • Buy seeds from reputable breeders with stable genetics
  • Avoid growing bag seeds from unknown origins (the parent may have been hermaphrodite, passing the trait to offspring)
  • If a strain herms under mild conditions, don't grow it again

4. Physical stress during flower

Root damage, aggressive defoliation, broken branches, or transplanting during flower can trigger hermaphroditism. The plant interprets severe physical stress as a survival threat.

Prevention:

  • Complete all major training (topping, supercropping, manifolding) before the flip to 12/12
  • Defoliate gently and in stages during flower, not all at once
  • Don't transplant during flower
  • Handle plants carefully — avoid jostling, dropping, or crushing

5. Extended flowering

Running a plant significantly past its optimal harvest window increases nanner risk. The plant's last-resort survival mechanism: self-pollinate to produce seeds before death. This is why late-harvest nanners are so common — the plant is trying to reproduce before its lifecycle ends.

Prevention: harvest on time. Check trichomes and harvest when they reach the desired maturity level. Don't push an extra 2 weeks "for more amber" if nanners start appearing.

What to do when you find hermaphrodite traits

Full hermaphrodite (pollen sacs, early flower)

Remove the plant. Do it gently — jostling releases pollen. Place a plastic bag over the plant before cutting it down to contain loose pollen. Remove it from the grow space and discard.

If other plants in the room are in early flower, they may not have been pollinated yet (pollen sacs need to open first). Continue growing and inspect remaining plants daily.

Nanners (late flower)

Evaluate the situation:

A few nanners, close to harvest (week 7–8+):

  • Carefully pluck the nanners with tweezers, checking for more
  • Harvest within the next 3–7 days — the clock is ticking
  • Some seeds may develop in the buds near the nanners, but if harvest is imminent, the seeds won't mature enough to be a major issue
  • The harvest is still usable and often high quality despite the nanners

Many nanners, far from harvest (week 5–6):

  • More difficult. You have 2–4 weeks of flower remaining
  • Pluck visible nanners daily (labor-intensive)
  • Increase airflow to disperse pollen (so it doesn't concentrate)
  • Accept that some seeds will develop
  • Consider harvesting early — partially mature buds are better than fully seeded buds

Nanners throughout multiple buds:

  • The stress that caused them will continue producing more
  • Harvesting now (even early) may be the best option
  • Check trichomes — if at least 50% are milky, the harvest will still be usable

If pollination occurred

If pollen sacs opened or nanners released pollen before you caught them, seeds will develop in the buds. This doesn't ruin the harvest:

  • The buds are still consumable — just pick out the seeds
  • Potency may be slightly reduced (the plant diverts energy to seed production instead of trichome development)
  • The seeds from a hermaphrodite pollination carry the herm trait and should NOT be planted — they'll likely hermaphrodite too

Common mistakes

  1. Confusing swollen calyxes with pollen sacs — in late flower, unpollinated calyxes swell and look slightly bulbous. They're teardrop-shaped with pistils. Pollen sacs are smooth, round, and have no pistils. When in doubt, wait a day — calyxes develop pistils, sacs don't
  2. Not light-testing the tent — most hermaphroditism is caused by light leaks that the grower doesn't know about. Test in complete darkness with adapted eyes
  3. Keeping a known hermaphrodite "to see what happens" — one open pollen sac can pollinate an entire room. Remove it immediately
  4. Growing unstable genetics in a perfect environment and blaming yourself — some strains herm regardless of conditions. It's not always your fault
  5. Planting seeds from hermaphrodite pollination — these seeds carry the hermaphrodite trait. They're not "free feminized seeds" — they're herm seeds. Discard them
