Water-only living soil is exactly what it sounds like: you build a soil mix with enough nutrition and biological activity to feed a cannabis plant through its entire lifecycle using only water. No bottled nutrients, no pH adjustment (the biology buffers it), no feeding schedules. You water when the pot's light, and the soil does the rest.
It's the simplest way to grow cannabis once you've built the mix — but building the mix correctly is where the work lives. Get the recipe right and the first grow is almost hands-off. Get it wrong and you'll see deficiencies by week 4.
Why water-only works
Traditional growing treats soil as an inert sponge — you add nutrients in liquid form, the plant absorbs them directly. Water- only living soil works differently:
- Slow-release amendments (bone meal, kelp meal, rock dust) break down over weeks, providing a steady supply of nutrients — not a feast-or-famine cycle
- Microbial populations (bacteria, fungi, protozoa) process organic amendments into plant-available forms. The biology IS the feeding system
- Mycorrhizal fungi extend the root system's reach 100–1000×, accessing phosphorus and micronutrients the roots alone can't reach
- The soil buffers pH naturally — carbonates in oyster shell and mineral amendments maintain pH in the 6.2–6.8 range without intervention
The key insight: you're not feeding the plant. You're building a living ecosystem that feeds the plant.

The recipe
This recipe builds enough soil for approximately 30 gallons — enough for two 15-gallon pots or three 10-gallon pots. Scale proportionally.
Base mix (equal parts by volume)

Peat vs. coco: peat is preferred for living soil because it's naturally acidic (pH 4.5–5.5), which is buffered up to optimal range by the mineral amendments. Coco starts at neutral pH and can go too alkaline with carbonate amendments. If using coco, reduce oyster shell by half.
Compost quality matters: the compost is where most of your starting biology comes from. Quality vermicompost (worm castings) from a reputable source is ideal — it's the richest source of beneficial microbes available to home growers. Avoid cheap "compost" from garden centers that may be partially decomposed or have poor microbial diversity.

Building and cooking the soil
Mixing
- Lay out a tarp on a flat surface (garage, patio)
- Dump the base mix components and blend thoroughly
- Add mineral amendments and mix until evenly distributed
- Add organic amendments and mix again
- Add biological inoculants and blend gently
The cook (mandatory)
Do not plant directly into freshly mixed soil. Raw organic amendments can burn roots as they decompose (the process generates heat and produces ammonia). The soil needs to "cook" — a 2–4 week microbial decomposition period:
- Moisten the mixed soil to about 50% saturation (squeeze test: a handful of soil should form a ball that crumbles easily — not dripping wet, not dusty dry)
- Place in a large container (storage tote, trash can, or the final growing pot)
- Cover loosely (not airtight — the biology needs oxygen)
- Keep in a warm location (65–80°F)
- Turn or stir every 3–5 days to introduce oxygen
- After 2–4 weeks, the soil will smell earthy and pleasant (not ammonia-like). It's ready to plant
If it smells like ammonia: the nitrogen amendments are still breaking down. Continue cooking — it needs more time.
If it smells sour or rotten: the soil has gone anaerobic. Turn it more frequently and ensure it's not too wet.
Pot size
Water-only soil needs enough volume to contain a full cycle's worth of nutrition. If the pot is too small, the plant will exhaust the nutrients before harvest:

Recommendation: 15-gallon fabric pots for most growers. The extra soil volume provides insurance against deficiencies and makes the system more forgiving.

Growing in water-only soil
Watering
This is the entire ongoing maintenance:
- Water when the pot feels light (lift it)
- Use dechlorinated water (let tap water sit for 24 hours, or use a carbon filter). Chlorine kills the beneficial microbes you spent weeks building
- Do NOT pH adjust the water (unless your tap water is extreme — below 5.0 or above 8.0). The soil biology buffers pH automatically through carbonate chemistry
- Water thoroughly until 10–20% runoff
- Do not feed nutrients. The soil is the food
Mulching
Cover the soil surface with 1–2 inches of mulch:
- Straw — cheap, effective, decomposes slowly
- Dried leaves — free if you have trees
- Cover crop (living mulch) — white clover is ideal
Mulch prevents the surface from drying out, protects surface biology from UV light, and feeds the soil as it decomposes.
Top-dressing (if needed)
If the plant shows signs of deficiency in late flower (yellowing beyond the normal fade, very pale new growth), top-dress with:
- Worm castings: 1/4 inch layer on the soil surface, water in
- Kelp meal: 1–2 tablespoons per 10 gallons, scratched into the surface
- Craft blend (Dr. Earth, Down To Earth, Build-A-Soil craft blend): follow package directions
Top-dressing takes 5–10 days to become available (the biology must process it), so it's a correction for gradual deficiencies, not an emergency fix. If you need fast nitrogen, a compost tea with fish hydrolysate can deliver results in 2–3 days.
Compost tea
Actively aerated compost tea (AACT) is a supplemental biology boost, not a replacement for the soil recipe:
- 2 cups worm castings in a mesh bag
- 1 tbsp unsulfured blackstrap molasses
- 5 gallons dechlorinated water
- Aerate with an aquarium pump for 24–36 hours
- Apply immediately as a root drench

Recycling the soil
The best part of living soil: you never throw it away. After harvest, the soil is re-amended and reused. Each cycle, the soil gets better — microbial populations mature, soil structure improves, and the nutrient cycling becomes more efficient.
Post-harvest re-amend
- Remove the root ball from the pot — or if using no-till, chop the stalk at soil level and leave the roots to decompose
- Remove any large root pieces
- Add fresh amendments at half the original rate (the soil still contains residual nutrients)
- Add a fresh layer of worm castings (1–2 cups per 10 gallons)
- Moisten, cover, and let cook for 1–2 weeks
- Plant the next cycle
No-till approach
The ultimate living soil method:
- After harvest, chop the stalk at soil level
- Top-dress with worm castings and amendment blend
- Plant a cover crop (clover, alfalfa)
- Let the cover crop grow for 2–4 weeks
- Chop and drop the cover crop (cut at soil level, leave roots)
- Plant the next cannabis directly into the same soil
- Never disturb the root zone — the fungal networks persist cycle to cycle

Troubleshooting
"My plant is showing deficiency in veg"
Possible causes:
- Soil didn't cook long enough — amendments haven't broken down yet. Top-dress with worm castings and compost tea
- Pot too small — not enough nutrient reserve. Transplant to a larger pot with fresh amended soil
- Water pH too extreme — while living soil buffers, tap water below 5.0 or above 8.0 can overwhelm the buffer. Test your source water
"My plant runs out of food in late flower"
Common with 10-gallon or smaller pots. Solutions:
- Top-dress with a flowering amendment (high-phosphorus: bone meal or bat guano)
- Apply compost tea with kelp and fish hydrolysate
- Next cycle, use a larger pot or increase the initial amendment rate by 25%
"Fungus gnats"
Living soil's organic surface is attractive to fungus gnats. The larvae feed on organic matter (and root hairs in severe infestations). Management:
- Yellow sticky traps — catch adults
- BTI (Mosquito Bits) — Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis kills larvae. Sprinkle on surface and water in
- Let the surface dry between waterings — gnat larvae need moist conditions in the top 1 inch
- Diatomaceous earth — sprinkle on the surface as a physical barrier
Common mistakes
- Skipping the cook — planting in raw, unmixed amendments burns roots. The 2–4 week cook is not optional
- Using too-small pots — 5-gallon pots don't hold enough nutrition for a full photoperiod cycle. Use 10+ gallons
- Adding bottled nutrients — synthetic salt nutrients kill the biology you built. The whole point of living soil is that the biology feeds the plant. Adding liquid ferts shortcuts the biology and can cause salt buildup that damages the microbial population
- Using chlorinated water — chlorine is a biocide. It kills the bacteria and fungi that make this system work. Always dechlorinate
- Tilling between cycles — disturbing the soil destroys fungal networks that took months to establish. Use no-till practices: chop and drop, top-dress, and replant without turning the soil
- Expecting instant results — living soil takes 2–3 cycles to reach peak performance as microbial populations mature. Your second and third grows in the same soil will outperform your first
