PK boosters — supplements heavy in phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) — are the most aggressively marketed products in the cannabis nutrient industry. The promise: bigger, denser, heavier buds. The reality is more nuanced. PK boosters can increase yield when used correctly, but overuse is one of the most common causes of late- flower nutrient problems.
What PK boosters do
During flower, cannabis shifts its nutrient demand. Vegetative growth consumed mostly nitrogen. Flower formation demands more phosphorus (for energy transfer, flower initiation, and resin production) and potassium (for enzyme activation, water regulation, and bud density).
Base bloom nutrients already contain elevated P and K compared to veg formulas. PK boosters add extra P and K on top of your base nutrients during the peak flowering weeks when demand is highest.
The biology

The 2-week sweet spot
Weeks 4–5 of flower are the highest-leverage weeks for PK supplementation. This is when calyx production is at maximum rate and the buds are actively building mass. Before week 3, the buds aren't developed enough to use extra PK. After week 6, the plant is ripening and slowing nutrient uptake.
