Your cannabis plant can't talk, but it's constantly telling you how it feels. Every leaf position, color change, growth pattern, and texture shift is a signal. Learning to read these signals is the single most valuable skill in cannabis cultivation — it's what separates growers who react from growers who anticipate.
This guide covers the visual language of cannabis: what to look for, what it means, and what to do.
Leaf position: the posture check
The position of the fan leaves is the plant's real-time mood indicator. Check it every time you visit the tent.
Healthy ("praying")
Leaves angled upward at 45° toward the light, like hands in prayer. This means: light intensity is in the sweet spot, the plant is actively photosynthesizing, and water/nutrient levels are balanced.
Action: nothing. This is the goal. Take note of what your environment settings look like when the plant looks like this.
Drooping down (overwatered)
Leaves hang limply downward while still feeling thick and heavy. The plant looks sad, like it's melting.
What's happening: roots are waterlogged. The soil has been wet for too long, and the roots can't get oxygen. Without oxygen, nutrient uptake stalls and the plant goes into survival mode.
Action: stop watering. Let the medium dry back until the pot feels light. Increase airflow around the base of the plant. Don't water again until the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry (or the pot is noticeably lighter).
Drooping down (underwatered)
Leaves droop AND feel thin, papery, almost crispy. The difference from overwatering: underwatered leaves feel dry and light; overwatered leaves feel heavy and waterlogged.
Action: water immediately, slowly and thoroughly, until you see 10–15% runoff. The plant will recover within 30–60 minutes. If it's been severely underwatered, recovery may take 2–4 hours.
Curling up ("taco leaves")
Leaf edges curl upward, making the leaf look like a taco shell when viewed from the end.
What's happening: heat stress or light stress. The leaf is trying to reduce its surface area exposed to the light/heat source.
Action: check temperature at canopy level. If above 82°F, raise the light or increase exhaust. If the light is too close (check manufacturer specs), raise it 4–6 inches. Also check VPD — low humidity plus high heat amplifies this response.
Curling down ("clawing")
Leaf tips curl downward like a claw. The leaf itself may look dark green and waxy.
What's happening: usually nitrogen toxicity. The plant has absorbed too much nitrogen, which causes dark, waxy leaves that claw at the tips.
Action: reduce nitrogen in your feed. If using a complete nutrient line, dilute to 50–75% strength. If in soil, skip the next feed and water with plain pH'd water.
Leaf color: the nutrient dashboard
Uniform medium green
Healthy. The plant is getting enough of everything. This is your baseline — memorize what this shade of green looks like for your strain, because deviations from it are your first signal of trouble.
Light green / lime (new growth)
New leaves are always lighter than mature leaves. This is normal. If only the newest growth is light green and the rest of the plant is healthy, everything is fine.
Worry when: ALL leaves turn light green, including the mature ones. That's a nitrogen deficiency — the plant is cannibalizing older leaves to feed new growth.
Yellowing from the bottom up
The oldest (lowest) leaves turn yellow first and may fall off. Upper growth stays green.
What it means: mobile nutrient deficiency — nitrogen, magnesium, or phosphorus. The plant moves these nutrients from old leaves to new growth when supply is short.
- Nitrogen: general yellowing, lower leaves go pale green → yellow → brown and drop off. Most common
- Magnesium: interveinal chlorosis (yellow between the veins, veins stay green) on middle-aged leaves
- Phosphorus: dark leaves with purple petioles and stems, slow growth
Action: check pH first (lockout mimics deficiency). If pH is correct, increase the relevant nutrient.
Yellowing from the top down
New growth comes in yellow or very pale. Older leaves stay green.
What it means: immobile nutrient deficiency — iron, sulfur, manganese, or zinc. The plant can't move these from old leaves, so new growth suffers first.
- Iron: bright yellow new leaves with green veins (classic iron chlorosis)
- Zinc: small, twisted new leaves with shortened internodes
- Manganese: small yellow spots between veins on new leaves
Action: almost always a pH problem. Iron and manganese lock out above pH 7.0. Correct pH first; the symptoms usually resolve in new growth within a week.
Brown spots
Random brown spots appearing on leaves, usually mid-canopy.
What it means: calcium deficiency, pH fluctuation, or foliar spray burn.
- Calcium: irregular brown spots, often starting at leaf edges, progressing inward. Common in coco without cal-mag supplementation
- Spray burn: if you recently foliar sprayed, the spots are where droplets concentrated under the light
Action: for calcium, add cal-mag to your feed (1–2 ml/L). For spray burn, don't foliar spray with lights on — always spray during the dark period or just before lights off.
Burnt (brown/crispy) leaf tips
The very tips of the leaves turn brown and crispy. Also called "tip burn" or "nute burn."
What it means: nutrient excess — the plant has more dissolved salts than it can process. This is the opposite of deficiency.
Action: reduce nutrient concentration by 20–30%. If runoff EC is high, do a mild flush with half-strength nutrient solution. Tip burn is cosmetic and won't worsen if you reduce the feed. The tips don't heal, but new growth will come in clean.
Stem signals
Purple or red stems
Common, usually genetic. Many strains show anthocyanin pigmentation in stems, especially with day/night temperature differentials.
Worry when: purple stems come with yellowing, slow growth, AND cold root zone. That combination suggests phosphorus uptake issues from cold temps. Warm the root zone to 68–72°F.
Thick, woody stems
A sign of a healthy, well-trained plant. Mechanical stress (wind, LST, supercropping) triggers the plant to thicken its stems for structural support.
Thin, stretchy stems
Not enough light. The plant is stretching to reach the light source. Move the light closer or increase intensity.
Growth speed signals
Explosive growth (3–4 inches/day in veg)
Everything is dialed. The plant has enough light, nutrients, water, and CO₂ to grow at its genetic maximum. In ideal conditions during late veg, some strains can grow 3–4 inches per day.
Stalled growth
The plant is alive but hasn't visibly grown in 5+ days. Check (in order):
- Root zone temperature (too cold = stalled growth)
- pH (lockout)
- Watering frequency (over or underwatering)
- Light intensity (not enough)
- Root bound (needs transplant)
Uneven growth
One side of the plant grows faster than the other.
What it means: uneven light distribution. The side closer to or more directly under the light grows faster. Use LST to even the canopy, or rotate the pot 90° every 2–3 days.
Root signals (fabric pots)
If you're growing in fabric pots, the roots are partially visible:
- White root tips poking through the fabric: healthy. The plant is actively exploring for nutrients. This is air pruning in action
- Brown, mushy roots visible through the fabric: root rot. Reduce watering, increase airflow, consider a hydrogen peroxide drench
- No roots visible: either the plant is very young, or the root system is weak. Check for overwatering or cold root zone
The daily 60-second inspection
Make this a habit every time you visit the tent:
- Posture check — are the leaves praying, drooping, or taco-ing?
- Color scan — any new yellowing, spots, or tip burn since yesterday?
- Growth check — has the plant grown? Is growth even?
- Smell check — the plant should smell like cannabis. A sour or rotting smell means problems in the root zone or mold
- Pest check — flip 2–3 leaves and check the undersides. Spider mites, thrips, and aphids hide there
This takes 60 seconds and catches 90% of problems before they become serious. The growers who struggle are the ones who water and walk away without looking.
The big picture
Reading your plant is a learned skill. Your first grow, you'll miss signals and overreact to normal variation. By your third grow, you'll catch a nitrogen issue from across the room before the symptoms are visible to a beginner.
The best way to build this skill: take a photo of your plant every day, at the same angle, under the same light. A week's worth of photos reveals patterns that a single glance misses. Changes that are invisible day-to-day become obvious in a time-lapse.
