If you're growing from regular (non-feminized) seeds, roughly half your plants will be male. Males produce pollen, not smokable flower. A single male plant can pollinate every female in the room, filling your buds with seeds and dramatically reducing their quality and potency. Identifying and removing males before they release pollen is essential.
Even with feminized seeds, it's worth knowing what male and female pre-flowers look like — feminized seeds are 99%+ female, but not 100%, and hermaphrodites can appear under stress.
When sex becomes visible
Cannabis doesn't show sex during the seedling stage. Sex organs develop during late vegetative growth or early flower:

Pre-flowers are the first sex organs to appear. They develop at the nodes (where branches meet the main stem), usually starting at the 4th–6th node from the bottom. Pre-flowers are small — you may need a 10x loupe to identify them confidently.
Female pre-flowers
What to look for:
- Calyx (bract): a small, teardrop-shaped structure at the node junction. It's slightly pointed, almost pear-shaped
- Pistils: one or two white hairs (stigmas) emerging from the tip of the calyx. This is the definitive female sign — no male structure produces pistils
- Stipules: small, pointed leaf-like structures at the node. Both sexes have stipules, so they're not diagnostic on their own. But female stipules tend to be wider and more spread apart
Confirmation: if you see a white hair emerging from a small teardrop at a node, the plant is female. No ambiguity.
Male pre-flowers
What to look for:
- Pollen sacs: small, round, ball-shaped structures at the nodes. They hang on short stems (pedicels), often in small clusters — like tiny bunches of grapes
- No pistils: male pre-flowers are smooth and round with no hairs emerging
- Shape: round or slightly oval. The difference from female pre-flowers is shape: female = teardrop with a point. Male = round ball on a stick
Confirmation: round, ball-shaped structures at the nodes with no white hairs = male. If you see multiple round balls forming a cluster, that's definitive.

The "wait and see" rule
If you're not sure, wait 2–3 days. Pre-flowers develop rapidly once they start. A structure that's ambiguous today will be obvious in 48 hours. It's better to wait and be certain than to pull a female you misidentified.
What to do when you identify males
Regular seeds: expect males
If you planted 10 regular seeds, expect 4–6 males. This is normal. Plan for it by starting more seeds than you intend to grow to flower.
Removal procedure
- Confirm the identification. Check multiple nodes. If pre- flowers on different nodes all show the same sex, the identification is reliable
- Remove the male plant carefully. Don't shake it — even early pollen sacs can release a small amount of pollen if jostled. Place a bag over the plant before cutting, or gently carry it out of the grow space
- Discard away from the grow. Don't compost male plants near your grow — pollen can travel by air
- Check the remaining plants. If one plant showed male, inspect all others again within the next few days
When is it too late?
Male pollen sacs typically open 1–2 weeks after they become visible. If you identify and remove males when pre-flowers first appear, you're safe. If you see open pollen sacs (they split into segments and release yellow powder), pollen has already been released and your females may already be pollinated.
Signs of pollination:
- Pistils (white hairs) on female buds turn brown and shrivel early (before normal ripening)
- Calyxes swell noticeably — they're forming seeds inside
- Seeds become visible in mature buds (hard, dark shells)
If pollination happened, the buds will still be usable but will contain seeds and will be less potent.
Why males exist (and when to keep them)
Males are essential for breeding — they contribute half the genetics to the next generation. If you're interested in creating your own crosses:
- Keep one male in a completely separate space (different room, tent, or ideally building)
- Collect pollen from the male by placing a bag over a mature pollen sac cluster and shaking gently
- Apply pollen selectively to one branch of a female plant using a paintbrush

Feminized seeds
Feminized seeds are produced by treating a female plant with colloidal silver or silver thiosulfate, forcing it to produce pollen sacs with female (XX) genetics. The resulting seeds are almost always female because both parents are genetically female.
Reliability: 99%+ female. Reputable seed banks producing feminized seeds have very low male/hermaphrodite rates. It's still worth checking pre-flowers, but you'll almost never find a male from quality feminized seeds.
Hermaphrodite risk: feminized seeds can hermaphrodite under stress (light leaks, heat, physical damage). This is different from a true male — see our hermaphrodite guide.
Common mistakes
- Pulling plants before pre-flowers are confirmed — swollen stipules (the pointed leaf-like structures at nodes) can look like pollen sacs to new growers. Wait for definitive pre-flowers. If it has a white hair, it's female. If it's a smooth round ball, it's male. If it's neither yet, wait
- Assuming feminized seeds are guaranteed female — they're 99%+, not 100%. Always check
- Leaving males "to see what happens" — one male pollinates every female in the room. A single open pollen sac releases thousands of grains. Remove males immediately
- Not checking all nodes — pre-flowers can develop at different rates on different nodes. Check at least 3–4 nodes before deciding
- Growing regular seeds without extras — if you need 4 females for your tent, start 8–10 regular seeds. Budget for a 50% male rate
