A space bucket is a self-contained cannabis growing system built from stacked 5-gallon buckets. It occupies less than 2 square feet of floor space, costs under $100 to build, and can produce 1–2 ounces of dried flower per cycle. It's not going to compete with a 4×4 tent on yield, but for apartment growers who need absolute discretion and have zero space for traditional setups, it's the smallest functional grow possible.

A completed space bucket is:
- A 5-gallon bucket (the growing chamber) topped with spacer rings (for height) and a lid containing LED lighting
- Light-tight (no light escapes to reveal the grow)
- Ventilated (fan + carbon filter for airflow and odor control)
- Reflective interior (for light efficiency)
- Modular (spacer rings add height as the plant grows)
Total dimensions: ~14" diameter × 24–36" tall. Fits in a closet, under a desk, or in a corner.

Build instructions
Step 1: Prepare the main bucket
The bottom bucket is the growing chamber:
- Cut a 3-inch hole in the side near the bottom for the intake fan. The fan should blow air INTO the bucket
- Line the entire interior with adhesive mylar. Smooth it flat — wrinkles reduce reflectivity and create hotspots
- Drill 4–6 drainage holes in the bottom (in case of water overflow from the inner pot)
Step 2: Build the spacer rings
Spacer rings give your plant room to grow vertically:
- Take the extra 5-gallon buckets and cut off the bottom and top rim, leaving a cylinder approximately 10–12 inches tall
- Line the interior with mylar
- These stack on top of the main bucket. Start with 1 spacer and add more as the plant grows
Step 3: Build the lid (lighting unit)
The lid holds the top light and exhaust fan:
- Mount the UFO or COB LED to the underside of the bucket lid using bolts or thermal adhesive. Center it
- Cut a hole in the side of the TOP bucket (which sits inverted as the lid enclosure) for the exhaust fan. The fan should blow air OUT of the bucket
- Attach the carbon filter to the exhaust fan intake side (inside the bucket). A simple DIY filter: stuff activated carbon between two layers of pantyhose and duct-tape it over the fan intake
Step 4: Install side lighting
LED strips on the inside walls of the spacer rings dramatically improve lower-bud quality:
- Adhere warm white + cool white LED strips in vertical runs inside each spacer ring
- Wire them in parallel to the 12V power supply
- The combination of top and side light reduces larf and improves yield on a short, bushy plant
Step 5: Wire and seal
- Route all power cables through a single drilled hole at the base (seal with silicone to prevent light leaks)
- Check for light leaks: turn on the lights, turn off the room lights, and look for escaping light. Seal any leaks with black duct tape or silicone
- Test the fans — air should flow in through the bottom fan, through the plant canopy, and out through the top exhaust
Growing in a space bucket
Strain selection (critical)
Space buckets have severe height limitations (24–36 inches total growing space, less with the light and pot). Strain choice matters more here than in any other grow setup:
Best choices:
- Autoflowers — short lifecycle, compact size, no photoperiod requirements. Top picks: Northern Lights Auto, White Widow Auto, Lowryder, Critical Auto
- Indica-dominant photoperiods — naturally short and bushy. Northern Lights, Hindu Kush, Afghan Kush
- Micro grows specifically bred for small spaces
Avoid:
- Any sativa-dominant strain (too tall)
- Any strain that's known for stretching
- Large-yielding strains (they need space to produce those yields)

In a space bucket, training isn't optional — it's the difference between a harvest and a plant that crashes into the light:
- Top once at the 4th or 5th node to keep height down and create multiple colas
- LST aggressively — bend all branches outward and down, securing them to the pot edge. The goal is a flat, wide canopy that fills the bucket diameter without growing tall
- Lollipop the bottom 1/3 of the plant — in such a small space, lower growth gets no light and produces nothing usable

Light schedule
Autoflowers: run 20/4 or 18/6 from seed to harvest. No photoperiod change needed.
Photoperiods: run 18/6 during veg (3–5 weeks is usually enough in a bucket), then flip to 12/12 for flower. The plant should be no more than 8–10 inches tall at the flip — it will double during the stretch.
Environment management
Space buckets have tight environmental margins:
Temperature: the small enclosed volume heats up quickly. The LED and exhaust fan are your temperature management system. If temperatures exceed 85°F:
- Increase exhaust fan speed or upgrade to a larger fan
- Run lights during the cooler part of the day (overnight)
- Remove a spacer ring to increase airflow volume
Humidity: the small volume also traps humidity. During flower, humidity above 60% in such a tight space is a mold invitation. The exhaust fan is your primary humidity control.
Airflow: the intake and exhaust fans create positive pressure from bottom to top. This provides fresh CO2, removes heat, and moves air around the plant to strengthen stems. Adequate airflow is critical in such a small volume.
Watering
A 3-gallon pot in a space bucket dries out relatively quickly under lights. Check daily — lift the pot to feel weight. In flower, you may need to water every 1–2 days.
Don't overwater — in the confined bucket space, excess water has nowhere to go quickly, and high humidity from wet soil in an enclosed volume promotes mold.

Expected yield
Realistic yield from a space bucket: 0.5–2 ounces dried per cycle. Variables:
- Light quality: a 100W LED produces more than a 50W LED
- Strain: some genetics produce more in small spaces
- Training: effective LST can double yield vs. untrained
- Grower experience: first bucket grow is a learning curve
Don't expect tent-level yields. A space bucket is about growing personal-use cannabis in the smallest possible footprint, not about maximizing production.
Upgrades
Once you've done a successful bucket grow, common upgrades:
Better lighting: upgrade from LED strips to a purpose-built quantum board (100W actual draw) designed for small spaces. This can increase yield by 30–50%.
Smart environmental control: a small temperature/humidity sensor (like a SensorPush) inside the bucket with an alert on your phone helps you catch temperature spikes before they damage the plant.
Automated watering: a small drip system on a timer prevents the daily "lift and check" routine, useful if you travel.

Limitations (be honest with yourself)
- Yield: 0.5–2 oz maximum. If you consume more than an ounce per month, a space bucket won't keep up
- Strain limitations: you can only grow short, compact plants
- Maintenance: daily monitoring is more critical than with a tent because the environment margins are tighter
- Heat: powerful LEDs in a small enclosed space generate heat that's hard to manage in summer
- Smell: a DIY carbon filter helps but won't eliminate odor as effectively as a proper inline fan + carbon filter
- Not scalable: if you want more yield, you need a tent, not more buckets (at some point, a 2×2 tent is simpler and more effective than 3 space buckets)
When to upgrade to a tent
If any of these apply, you've outgrown the space bucket:
- You want more than 2 oz per cycle
- You want to grow sativa or large-hybrid strains
- You're spending more time managing the bucket environment than enjoying the grow
- You have the space for a 2×2 or 2×4 tent

Common mistakes
- Using a white bucket — white buckets let light through. Algae grows in the soil and root zone. Use BLACK buckets only, or wrap white buckets in black duct tape
- Insufficient exhaust — heat builds fast in 5 gallons. Upgrading the exhaust fan is the single most impactful improvement for bucket growing
- Growing a tall strain — a Sour Diesel in a space bucket will crash into the light within weeks. Choose short genetics
- Skipping training — an untopped, untrained plant in a bucket produces one small cola. Training is mandatory for any reasonable yield
- Light leaks — light escaping the bucket compromises stealth and can cause hermaphroditism in photoperiod plants. Check for leaks with all external lights off
