Many growers start because they want relief — from pain that prescriptions don't touch, from insomnia that sleep hygiene can't fix, or from anxiety that they'd rather not manage with benzodiazepines. Cannabis can help with all of these. But "smoke weed" is not a medical protocol. What you consume, how you consume it, and how much matters enormously.

How cannabis affects the body

Cannabis compounds interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) — a network of receptors (CB1 and CB2) found throughout the brain, nervous system, immune system, and organs. The ECS regulates pain perception, mood, sleep, appetite, inflammation, and immune response.

  • CB1 receptors — concentrated in the brain and central nervous system. THC binds here. This is where the psychoactive effects (euphoria, relaxation, altered perception) originate, plus effects on pain, sleep, and appetite
  • CB2 receptors — concentrated in the immune system and peripheral tissues. CBD interacts here (indirectly). This is where anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating effects originate

Cannabis for sleep

What works

High-THC + high-myrcene strains are the most consistently effective for sleep. Myrcene is the dominant terpene in most indica-leaning strains and has documented sedating properties. Combined with THC (which reduces time to fall asleep), this is the classic "indica knockout" formula.

CBN (cannabinol) is THC that has degraded through age, heat, or light. It's mildly sedating on its own and synergizes with THC for sleep. You can increase CBN content by:

  • Harvesting later (more amber trichomes = more CBN)
  • Allowing cured flower to age longer (THC converts to CBN over months)

Linalool-dominant strains add calming, anxiolytic effects that help with the "can't turn off my brain" component of insomnia.

What to grow for sleep

Look for indica or indica-dominant hybrids with these characteristics:

  • High myrcene content (earthy, musky, herbal aroma)
  • THC in the 18–25% range (more isn't necessarily better for sleep — very high THC can cause anxiety that counteracts the sedation)
  • Linalool or caryophyllene as secondary terpenes

Dosing for sleep

  • Start low: 2.5–5mg THC (a single small hit from a pipe or vaporizer, or a carefully dosed edible)
  • Take 30–60 minutes before bed (inhaled: 10–15 minutes before; edibles: 60–90 minutes before)
  • Too much is counterproductive — high doses of THC can cause racing thoughts, anxiety, and restlessness. The dose that helps you sleep is lower than the dose that gets you very high
  • Tolerance builds: THC for sleep loses effectiveness over time. Consider cycling (5 days on, 2 days off) or using CBD-dominant products during off-days

What the research says

A 2022 systematic review in the Journal of Clinical Medicine found that cannabis reduces self-reported sleep latency (time to fall asleep) and increases self-reported sleep quality, particularly with THC- dominant products. However, long-term daily use may suppress REM sleep, and withdrawal after heavy use can temporarily worsen insomnia.

Cannabis for chronic pain

What works

Pain management with cannabis is the best-supported medical application, with the most research backing.

THC — acts on CB1 receptors in the central nervous system to reduce pain signal transmission. Effective for neuropathic pain (nerve damage), inflammatory pain (arthritis, autoimmune), and cancer-related pain.

CBD — anti-inflammatory via multiple pathways (not just ECS). Effective for inflammatory pain conditions. Does not provide the acute pain relief that THC does but reduces the underlying inflammation that causes pain.

Caryophyllene — the only terpene that directly binds to CB2 receptors, producing anti-inflammatory effects similar to CBD. Strains high in caryophyllene (spicy, peppery aroma) are particularly suited for pain management.

The combination — THC + CBD + caryophyllene is the most effective profile for pain. The entourage effect means the combination works better than any component alone.

What to grow for pain

Ideal pain-management strains have:

  • Moderate THC (15–22%) — enough for analgesic effect without overwhelming psychoactivity
  • Meaningful CBD (1–5% or higher for CBD-dominant strains)
  • High caryophyllene and/or myrcene

Strain suggestions:

  • Balanced (THC:CBD roughly 1:1): Harlequin, Cannatonic, ACDC, Pennywise
  • THC-dominant with caryophyllene: OG Kush, GSC, Bubba Kush, Original Glue

Dosing for pain

  • Inhaled (fastest onset, 1–3 hours duration): good for breakthrough pain. Start with one hit, wait 10 minutes, add more if needed
  • Edibles (slower onset, 4–8 hours duration): better for sustained pain management. Start at 2.5–5mg THC, increase by 2.5mg increments on subsequent sessions until you find effective dose
  • Topicals (localized, no psychoactive effect): apply directly to the painful area for localized relief. THC and CBD topicals don't enter the bloodstream in significant amounts, so no high — useful for joint pain, muscle soreness, arthritis
  • Tinctures (under the tongue, 15–45 min onset): good balance of speed and duration. Sublingual absorption bypasses the liver, giving more predictable dosing than edibles

What the research says

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine concluded in their 2017 report that there is "substantial evidence" that cannabis is effective for chronic pain in adults. Multiple meta-analyses since have confirmed efficacy, particularly for neuropathic pain. Cannabis is not a replacement for all pain medication, but it can reduce opioid dependence when used as an adjunct.

Cannabis for anxiety

The paradox

Cannabis and anxiety have a complex relationship. At low doses, THC can be profoundly anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing). At high doses, THC can cause or worsen anxiety and panic. This dose-dependent effect is the most important thing to understand.

CBD is consistently anxiolytic across all doses studied. It does not cause anxiety at any dose, and it counteracts THC-induced anxiety. For anxiety-prone individuals, CBD-dominant products are the safest starting point.

What to grow for anxiety

CBD-dominant strains (safest starting point):

  • Minimal THC, maximum CBD
  • No risk of THC-induced anxiety
  • Grow: ACDC, Charlotte's Web, Harle-Tsu, Cannatonic (high-CBD pheno)

Balanced THC:CBD strains (moderate approach):

  • Equal parts THC and CBD
  • CBD buffers the anxiety-inducing potential of THC
  • Grow: Harlequin, Pennywise, Critical Mass CBD

THC-dominant with limonene/linalool (experienced users):

  • Limonene and linalool are the most anxiolytic terpenes
  • Strains smelling of citrus and lavender tend to be mood-elevating without anxiety
  • Grow: Strawberry Cough (famous for social anxiety relief), Tangie, Lavender

Dosing for anxiety

  • Microdosing is key — 1–2.5mg THC is the therapeutic range for anxiety in many people. This is much less than a typical recreational dose
  • CBD can be dosed higher — 10–25mg CBD is a common therapeutic dose for anxiety with no psychoactive effect
  • Avoid high-THC edibles — edibles metabolize through the liver into 11-hydroxy-THC, which is more potent and more anxiety-inducing than inhaled THC. Start at 2.5mg or less
  • Strain matters more for anxiety than for any other condition — the wrong terpene profile (high myrcene + very high THC) can exacerbate anxiety even at moderate doses

What the research says

A 2019 study in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry found that 300mg CBD significantly reduced anxiety in a simulated public speaking test compared to placebo. Multiple studies confirm CBD's anxiolytic effects through 5-HT1A serotonin receptor activation. For THC, the evidence is biphasic: low doses reduce anxiety, high doses increase it.
