Your first grow, you'll make a dozen mistakes. Your second grow, you'll make half as many — but only if you remember what went wrong the first time. Memory is unreliable. A grow journal is not.
The growers who improve fastest aren't the ones who read the most guides. They're the ones who write down what they did, what happened, and what they'd change. After three grows with a journal, you'll have a personalized grow playbook that no guide on the internet can replace — because it's based on your genetics, your environment, your water, your specific setup.
What to track
The daily log (2 minutes)
Every day you visit your plants, record:

That's it. Two minutes. Don't overthink it — consistency beats thoroughness. A journal with basic daily data for 90 days is more useful than an elaborate journal you abandon after 2 weeks.
The weekly photo
Take one photo per plant, same angle, same distance, every week. Use the same light (don't photograph under the grow light — the color washes out details). A phone flashlight or room light works.
Why: day-to-day changes are invisible. A week of photos reveals growth rate, color shifts, and structural changes that your eye normalizes away. A month of photos is a time-lapse that shows the entire arc of the grow.
Event log (when things happen)
Record specific events as they occur:
- Transplant: when, from what size to what size, root condition
- Training: what you did (topped at node X, LST started, etc.)
- Deficiency/toxicity spotted: what symptom, where on the plant, what you think it is
- Treatment applied: what you sprayed or added, at what dose
- Flip to flower: the exact date (this is your reference point for the entire flower cycle)
- First pistils visible: the date — this is "actual flower start" vs. the flip date
- Harvest: date, wet weight if you track it, trichome state
How to track it
Paper notebook (the classic)
A dedicated notebook with dated entries. Simple, reliable, no batteries, no app subscriptions.
Pros: always available, no tech friction, easy to sketch plant diagrams Cons: not searchable, no photo integration, not backed up
Spreadsheet
A Google Sheet or Excel file with columns for each data point. One row per day.
Pros: sortable, chartable, backed up to cloud, shareable Cons: slightly more friction to log entries, harder to add photos
Phone notes app
Apple Notes, Google Keep, or any simple note app. One note per grow, daily entries with photos inline.
Pros: photos and text together, always with you, cloud-backed Cons: gets messy over a long grow, hard to compare across grows
Grow-tracking apps
Dedicated cannabis grow journal apps (Grow with Jane, Bud, GrowBuddy) with built-in fields for cannabis-specific data.
Pros: purpose-built, often include nutrient schedules and strain databases, community sharing Cons: some are subscription-based, some have been abandoned by developers, your data may not export easily
The recommendation: start with whatever you'll actually use consistently. A messy notebook you fill in every day beats a beautiful spreadsheet you abandon after a week. Upgrade your system once the habit is established.
The data that actually matters
After your first journal is complete, these are the entries you'll reference most:
pH and EC trends
Plot your input pH, runoff pH, input EC, and runoff EC over time. The pattern reveals:
- Rising runoff EC: nutrient buildup. You're feeding more than the plant can use. Reduce concentration or flush
- Falling runoff pH: the soil is acidifying. Increase your input pH by 0.2–0.3 or add dolomite lime if in organic soil
- Stable runoff pH and EC: everything is balanced. Record these ratios — they're your sweet spot for this strain in this medium
Watering frequency
How often you water and how much changes through the grow. Tracking it reveals your plant's water consumption pattern:
- Early veg: every 3–4 days (small plant, big pot)
- Late veg: every 2 days
- Mid flower: daily (peak consumption)
- Late flower: every 2 days (consumption drops as the plant finishes)
This pattern is consistent within a strain/medium/pot-size combination. On your second run, you'll know exactly when to increase watering frequency because the journal told you.
The day you spotted a problem
When you look back and see "Day 34: noticed light green lower leaves, increased N," and then "Day 38: color improving, new growth green" — you've documented a successful diagnosis and treatment. The next time you see light green lower leaves at day 30, you won't spend a week worrying about it. You'll increase N immediately and move on.
Yield per plant
Dry weight (after cure), strain, training method, pot size, light wattage, grow duration. This lets you calculate:
- Grams per watt — efficiency metric. 1 g/watt is good; 1.5+ g/watt is excellent
- Grams per square foot — space efficiency
- Grams per day of grow — time efficiency
Tracking these across multiple grows shows you which variables actually move the needle for your setup.
The post-grow review
After harvest and cure, spend 20 minutes reviewing the journal and answering:
- What went well? (Repeat this next time)
- What went wrong? (When did you first notice? What caused it? How did you fix it?)
- What would you change? (Specific, actionable changes — not "grow better" but "increase watering frequency starting week 4 instead of waiting for drooping")
- What's your yield and quality assessment? (Weight, potency subjective rating, terpene assessment, bag appeal)
- What strain/technique do you want to try next?
Write these answers at the end of the journal. When you start your next grow, read them first. This 20-minute review is the highest-value moment in the entire journal process — it's where raw data becomes insight.
The multi-grow advantage
One grow journal is useful. Three grow journals are a superpower. After three documented grows, you have:
- A clear picture of your environment's patterns (summer vs. winter grows, seasonal humidity, temperature trends)
- Strain comparison data (which strains performed best in your setup)
- A refined feeding schedule that's been tested and adjusted twice
- Confidence in your ability to diagnose problems because you've seen them before and have the notes to prove it
This is the real value: a grow journal turns every grow into an experiment with documented results, and your fourth grow benefits from the accumulated knowledge of the first three. Growers without journals make the same mistakes on grow four that they made on grow one.
