Cannabis Soil Amendments: Kelp, Guano, Bone Meal, Worm Castings, and More

What each amendment does, how much to use, when to apply it, and which combinations build a complete soil that feeds your plant without bottled nutrients.

Bottled nutrients are convenient. You measure, you pour, and the plant gets what it needs in a form it can absorb immediately. But there's another approach: build a soil so rich and biologically active that the plant feeds itself, pulling nutrients from organic amendments as the soil biology breaks them down.

This is the foundation of organic growing — and it starts with understanding what each amendment contributes, how they interact, and how to combine them into a complete soil recipe.

How organic amendments work

Organic amendments don't feed the plant directly. They feed the soil biology (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes), which breaks them down into plant-available forms. This is a slower, gentler delivery system than synthetic nutrients — less risk of burn, more consistent feeding, and a soil that improves over time instead of depleting.

The cycle:

  1. You add an amendment to the soil (kelp meal, bone meal, etc.)
  2. Soil microbes colonize the amendment and begin breaking it down
  3. Bacterial and fungal activity converts the raw material into plant-available nutrients (nitrate, phosphate, potassium ions)
  4. The plant's roots absorb these nutrients via the rhizosphere (the thin zone of soil immediately around the roots)
  5. As the plant exudes sugars through its roots, it feeds the microbes, which break down more amendment — a self-reinforcing loop

Timeline: most amendments take 2–4 weeks to become fully available after mixing into soil. This is why amended soil is often prepared weeks before planting ("cooking" the soil). See our living soil guide for a full build.

The amendments: what each one does

Worm castings (vermicompost)

What it is: worm poop. Earthworms (typically red wigglers) digest organic matter and excrete castings that are rich in plant-available nutrients, beneficial microbes, and humic acids.

What it provides:

  • Balanced NPK (roughly 1-0-0 to 2-1-1, depending on the worm's diet)
  • Massive microbial diversity — one gram of castings contains billions of beneficial bacteria
  • Humic and fulvic acids that improve nutrient uptake

How to use:

  • Mix into soil at 15–30% by volume as a base ingredient
  • Top-dress with ¼ inch layer every 2–4 weeks as an ongoing feed
  • Brew into compost tea for a liquid microbial inoculant

Can you overdo it? Almost impossible. Worm castings are mild enough to use straight without burning plants. This is the single safest and most universally useful amendment.

Kelp meal

What it is: dried, ground seaweed (typically Ascophyllum nodosum).

What it provides:

  • Potassium (K) — the primary macronutrient contribution
  • Over 60 trace minerals and micronutrients
  • Natural growth hormones (cytokinins, auxins) that promote root growth, stress resistance, and overall vigor
  • Alginic acid, which improves soil structure

How to use:

  • Mix into soil at 1–2 tablespoons per gallon of soil
  • Top-dress with 1 tablespoon per gallon of pot size every 3–4 weeks
  • Kelp extract (liquid) can be watered in for faster availability

Best for: potassium supplementation, micronutrient insurance, stress resistance. Kelp is the "multivitamin" of soil amendments.

Bat guano

What it is: bat droppings, aged and processed. Available in two types with very different nutrient profiles.

High-nitrogen guano (Mexican/Indonesian):

  • NPK roughly 10-3-1
  • Dark brown, earthy smell
  • Best for vegetative growth
  • Use: 1–2 tablespoons per gallon of soil, mixed in or top-dressed

High-phosphorus guano (Jamaican/cave-aged):

  • NPK roughly 1-10-0
  • Lighter color, chalky texture
  • Best for flowering (drives bud development)
  • Use: 1–2 tablespoons per gallon, mixed in pre-flower or top-dressed at the flip

Caution: guano is potent. Overuse causes nutrient burn. Start at the low end and observe. It's also slightly alkaline — in already-high- pH soils, it can push pH further up.

Bone meal

What it is: finely ground animal bones, steamed or raw.

What it provides:

  • Phosphorus (P) — typically 3-15-0 or similar
  • Calcium — significant amounts, making it partially a cal-mag source
  • Slow-release — bone meal breaks down over 2–4 months

How to use:

  • Mix into soil at 2–3 tablespoons per gallon during soil preparation
  • Not effective as a top-dress mid-grow (too slow to activate from the surface)
  • Must be mixed into the soil where microbial activity can access it

Best for: long-term phosphorus provision throughout the grow. A single soil mix with bone meal provides P from start to finish without re-amendment.

Note: bone meal works best in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0–6.5). In alkaline soil, the phosphorus binds with calcium and becomes less available.

Blood meal

What it is: dried, powdered animal blood from slaughterhouse processing.

What it provides:

  • Nitrogen (N) — typically 12-0-0 or similar. One of the highest- nitrogen organic amendments
  • Fast-acting compared to other organic sources (available within 1–2 weeks)

How to use:

  • Mix into soil at 1–2 tablespoons per gallon
  • Can be top-dressed sparingly as a nitrogen boost during veg
  • Use less than you think — blood meal is concentrated and can burn if over-applied

Best for: quick nitrogen supplementation in veg. If lower leaves are yellowing and you need an organic N boost, blood meal is the fastest option.

Caution: blood meal can attract animals (dogs, raccoons) in outdoor grows. It can also lower soil pH slightly, which may be beneficial in alkaline soils.

Dolomite lime

What it is: ground limestone (calcium magnesium carbonate).

What it provides:

  • Calcium and magnesium in a slow-release form
  • pH buffering — raises and stabilizes soil pH

How to use:

  • Mix into soil at 1–2 tablespoons per gallon during soil prep
  • Acts as a pH buffer, preventing acidic drift over time
  • Not a quick fix — takes 2–4 weeks to fully react with the soil

Best for: preventing pH drift in peat-based soils (which acidify over time) and providing a steady baseline of calcium and magnesium. Essential in organic soil mixes where you're not adding synthetic cal-mag.

Gypsum (calcium sulfate)

What it is: a mineral compound (CaSO₄·2H₂O).

What it provides:

  • Calcium without raising pH (unlike dolomite lime)
  • Sulfur, which supports terpene production and overall plant health
  • Improves soil structure by reducing compaction

How to use:

  • Mix into soil at 1–2 tablespoons per gallon
  • Can be top-dressed during flower for a calcium and sulfur boost

Best for: calcium supplementation when pH is already in the correct range and you don't want to raise it further. Also useful in heavy clay soils to improve drainage.

Neem meal / neem cake

What it is: the pressed residue after neem oil extraction from neem tree seeds.

What it provides:

  • Mild NPK (roughly 6-1-2)
  • Natural pest deterrent — neem contains azadirachtin, which disrupts pest reproduction. Mixing neem meal into soil discourages fungus gnats, root aphids, and other soil-dwelling pests
  • Soil conditioning

How to use:

  • Mix into soil at 1–2 tablespoons per gallon
  • Top-dress with 1 tablespoon per gallon every 3–4 weeks

Best for: dual-purpose nutrient and pest control in organic builds. The pest deterrent effect makes it especially valuable in outdoor grows and grows in basements where fungus gnats are common.

Perlite (not a nutrient, but essential)

What it is: expanded volcanic glass — those white, lightweight pebbles you see in commercial soil mixes.

What it provides:

  • Zero nutrients — perlite is inert
  • Drainage and aeration — prevents soil compaction and ensures roots get oxygen

How to use:

  • Mix into any soil at 20–30% by volume
  • More perlite = faster drainage = more frequent watering
  • Non-negotiable in any container soil mix. Without adequate perlite, organic soil compacts and waterlogging becomes inevitable

Building a basic amended soil

A simple, effective organic soil recipe:

Plus amendments per gallon of mix:

  • Kelp meal: 1 tbsp
  • Bone meal: 2 tbsp
  • Blood meal: 1 tbsp (or neem meal for dual-purpose)
  • Dolomite lime: 1 tbsp (if using peat base; skip for coco)
  • Gypsum: ½ tbsp

The cook: mix all ingredients, moisten evenly (the soil should feel like a wrung-out sponge), and let sit in a covered container for 2–4 weeks. The microbial activity during this period breaks down the amendments into plant-available forms and balances the pH. Stir the mix once a week.

After cooking, the soil is ready to plant in directly. Many growers don't feed any additional nutrients for the first 4–6 weeks — the amended soil provides everything.

Common mistakes

  1. Over-amending — more is not better. Excessive blood meal or guano causes nitrogen toxicity. Start conservative; the soil biology makes nutrients available gradually
  2. Not cooking the soil — raw amendments can burn seedlings. The 2–4 week cook lets microbial activity balance the nutrient load
  3. Skipping perlite — amended organic soil is dense. Without adequate perlite, it compacts, holds too much water, and suffocates roots
  4. Mixing incompatible amendments — bone meal (alkaline) and sulfur (acidifying) in the same mix can cause pH chaos. Use dolomite for gentle pH buffering; don't try to force pH with concentrated amendments
  5. Forgetting the biology — amendments don't work without soil microbes. If you're starting with sterile or depleted soil, add microbial inoculant (Recharge, Great White, or homemade compost tea) to kickstart the biology
