Walk into a dispensary and smell two different strains. One hits you with fuel and skunk. The other smells like blueberries and lavender. That's not marketing — that's chemistry. The molecules responsible for those smells are terpenes, and they're the biggest factor in why different strains feel different, even at the same THC percentage.
What terpenes actually are
Terpenes are aromatic compounds produced by the trichome glands on cannabis flowers (the same glands that produce cannabinoids like THC and CBD). Cannabis produces over 200 identified terpenes, though only 10–20 appear in significant concentrations.
Every plant produces terpenes — they're the reason lemons smell like lemons and pine trees smell like pine. In nature, terpenes serve as pest repellents, UV protectants, and pollinators. In cannabis, they do all of that plus something else: they modulate how cannabinoids affect your brain and body.
The entourage effect
THC alone feels different from THC + terpenes. This is the entourage effect: terpenes interact with cannabinoids (and with each other) to shape the overall experience. It's why a 20% THC strain rich in myrcene feels sedating and heavy, while a 20% THC strain rich in limonene feels uplifting and energetic — same THC, completely different experience.
This is also why THC percentage alone is a terrible predictor of how a strain will feel. The terpene profile is a much better indicator.
The major terpenes
Myrcene
Smell: earthy, musky, herbal. Think mangoes, hops, and thyme. Myrcene is the most abundant terpene in most cannabis strains.
Effects: sedating, relaxing, body-heavy. Myrcene is the primary driver of the "indica effect" — couch lock, sleepiness, pain relief. Strains with more than 0.5% myrcene are generally classified as "indica-feeling" regardless of their actual indica/sativa genetics.

Strains known for it: OG Kush, Granddaddy Purple, Blue Dream, Northern Lights
Growing tip: myrcene levels increase with longer flowering times. Harvesting a few days later (more amber trichomes) tends to produce higher myrcene content.
Limonene
Smell: citrus — lemon, orange, grapefruit. Bright and sharp. If a strain smells like citrus peel, limonene is the dominant terpene.
Effects: uplifting, mood-enhancing, anti-anxiety. Limonene is associated with the "sativa effect" — energy, creativity, focus. It also has documented anti-anxiety and antidepressant properties in isolation.

Strains known for it: Super Lemon Haze, Tangie, Lemon Skunk, Do-Si-Dos, Wedding Cake
Growing tip: limonene is highly volatile — it evaporates easily at high temperatures. Low-temp drying (60–65°F) preserves limonene better than fast drying at 75°F+.
Caryophyllene (beta-caryophyllene)
Smell: spicy, peppery, woody. Think cracked black pepper and cloves. Caryophyllene is the reason some strains make you sneeze.
Effects: anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, stress-reducing. Unique among terpenes because it binds directly to CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system — technically making it both a terpene and a cannabinoid. It doesn't get you "high" but contributes to body relief and anti-inflammatory effects.

Strains known for it: GSC (Girl Scout Cookies), Bubba Kush, Chemdawg, Sour Diesel, Original Glue
Growing tip: caryophyllene is relatively heat-stable compared to other terpenes, so it survives drying and curing well. It's one of the few terpenes you can still smell strongly in cured flower.
Linalool
Smell: floral, lavender, slightly spicy. If a strain smells like a spa, that's linalool.
Effects: calming, sedating, anti-anxiety. Linalool is the active compound in lavender essential oil and has documented anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. Strains high in linalool tend toward relaxation without heavy sedation.

Strains known for it: Lavender, Do-Si-Dos, LA Confidential, Amnesia Haze, Zkittlez
Growing tip: linalool levels can increase with mild stress in late flower — light temperature drops (night temps in the low 60s°F) may boost production. Don't overdo it.
Pinene (alpha-pinene)
Smell: sharp pine, like walking through a conifer forest. Fresh, clean, and instantly recognizable.
Effects: alert, focused, memory-enhancing. Pinene is a bronchodilator (opens airways) and counteracts some of THC's short-term memory impairment. Strains high in pinene tend to feel clear-headed and functional rather than foggy.

Strains known for it: Jack Herer, Blue Dream, OG Kush, Dutch Treat, Trainwreck
Growing tip: pinene is the most common terpene in the natural world but not always dominant in cannabis. Strains with significant pinene often have piney, "forest" aromas that are unmistakable.
Humulene
Smell: earthy, woody, spicy. The "hoppy" aroma in craft beer comes from humulene (hops and cannabis are botanical cousins).
Effects: appetite-suppressing (unique among cannabis compounds — most promote appetite), anti-inflammatory. Humulene contributes to the "functional" feeling of some strains that don't trigger munchies.

Strains known for it: White Widow, Headband, GSC, Sour Diesel, Pink Kush
Terpinolene
Smell: complex and hard to pin down — floral, herbal, slightly piney, with hints of citrus. Some describe it as "fresh paint" or "woody sweet." It's the least common of the major terpenes.
Effects: mildly sedating at higher concentrations, uplifting at lower concentrations. Strains dominant in terpinolene are relatively rare and often described as having unique, hard-to-categorize effects.

How terpene profiles create distinct effects
Individual terpenes are interesting, but in practice, cannabis always delivers a blend. The ratio of terpenes — not just their presence — determines the experience.

Reading a lab test's terpene profile
If you have access to COAs (certificates of analysis) from dispensaries or testing labs, the terpene section tells you more about how the strain will feel than the THC percentage does.
Look for:
- Total terpene percentage — above 2% is terpy; above 3% is exceptional. Below 1% means the terpenes were lost to poor drying, old storage, or low-quality genetics
- Which terpenes dominate — the top 2–3 terpenes by concentration define the strain's character
- The myrcene ratio — if myrcene is the dominant terpene and comprises more than 40% of the total terpene content, expect a sedating experience regardless of the strain's name or marketing
Growing for maximum terpene expression
Genetics set the ceiling, but growing conditions determine how close you get to it. Two clones from the same mother can produce dramatically different terpene profiles depending on how they're grown.
Temperature
- Cool nighttime temps (62–68°F) in the last 2–3 weeks of flower preserve volatile terpenes that would evaporate at higher temps
- Excessive heat (above 80°F) destroys terpenes — they're volatile organic compounds that evaporate at relatively low temperatures
- The day/night differential matters — a 10°F drop at night slows terpene evaporation during the dark period
Light
- Moderate to high PPFD (700–900 µmol in flower) drives terpene production as a UV/light stress response
- UV-B supplementation (in the final 2–3 weeks) can boost terpene and trichome production. The plant produces more resin as a sunscreen. Use carefully — 1–2 hours per day, not continuous
- Too much light can degrade surface terpenes on the top colas. If the top buds smell less than the middle buds, the light may be too intense
Nutrients
- Don't overfeed in late flower — excess nitrogen in flower suppresses terpene production. The plant focuses on growth instead of resin
- Sulfur supplementation — some growers add sulfur (in the form of Epsom salt or specialized supplements) in mid-flower to boost pungent terpenes like myrcene and caryophyllene. The evidence is anecdotal but the practice is widespread among connoisseur growers
Drying and curing
This is where most terpenes are lost. A rough, fast dry at 75–80°F can evaporate 50%+ of the volatile terpene content. The cure develops remaining terpenes but can't replace what was lost in drying.
- Dry at 60–65°F and 55–62% RH for 10–14 days
- Cure in jars for 4+ weeks — terpene complexity continues to develop during the cure
- Store in cool, dark conditions — terpenes degrade with heat, light, and air exposure
