A healthy cannabis plant in veg should show visible daily growth — new leaves unfolding, stem lengthening, the canopy expanding noticeably from day to day. If your plant looks the same today as it did three days ago, something is wrong. It's alive, but it's not thriving.
Slow growth is frustrating because the symptoms are vague — the plant doesn't look sick, it just isn't growing. The cause is usually one of a small number of common problems, all fixable.
The diagnostic checklist
Work through these in order. The most common cause is listed first.
1. Overwatering
The #1 cause of slow growth in soil and coco.
When the root zone stays wet for too long, roots can't access oxygen. Without oxygen, root function slows or stops. Without root function, the plant can't absorb nutrients or water efficiently, even though both are present. Growth stalls.
How to check:
- Lift the pot. Is it heavy? The medium is still wet
- Stick your finger 2 inches into the soil. Is it moist? Don't water yet
- Has the surface been wet for more than 3 days? You're overwatering
The fix: water less frequently. Let the medium dry until the pot feels light and the top inch of soil is dry before watering again. In veg, most plants in soil need water every 2–4 days. If you're watering daily in soil, that's almost certainly too often (coco is different — daily watering is normal in coco).
2. Root problems
Directly related to overwatering, but also includes other root issues.
- Root rot: brown, slimy, smelly roots. Growth stalls completely, leaves droop even when the soil is wet
- Rootbound: roots circling the bottom of the pot. The plant has outgrown its container. Growth slows as root mass can no longer expand
- Cold roots: the pot is sitting on a cold floor (concrete, tile). Root-zone temperature below 60°F dramatically slows nutrient uptake
How to check:
- Gently remove the plant from its pot and inspect the roots (if in soil or coco). Healthy roots = white, firm. Problem roots = brown, mushy, or wrapped in circles at the bottom
- Check the floor temperature where the pot sits. If it's below 60°F, elevate the pot on a plant riser
The fix:
- Root rot: let soil dry, add hydrogen peroxide (1 mL/L) to next watering, improve drainage, add beneficial microbes
- Rootbound: transplant to a larger container
- Cold roots: elevate pot, add a heat mat under the pot (set to 72°F), or move to a warmer spot
3. Insufficient light
The plant can only grow as fast as its energy supply allows.
Low light levels limit photosynthesis, which limits growth. A plant under a single 23W CFL grows, but slowly. A plant under a 300W LED at appropriate height grows much faster because it's producing more energy per hour.
How to check:
- Is the light on 18/6 (or 20/4 for autos)? A shorter light schedule during veg reduces daily light integral (DLI), which slows growth
- Is the light far enough away? Too far = not enough PPFD at the canopy. Too close = light stress (different symptom — see below)
- What is the light wattage per square foot? Below 30W/sq ft of actual draw, growth will be slow. Target 40–50W/sq ft for good veg growth
The fix:
- Lower the light (if no signs of light stress) or increase intensity (if dimmable)
- Run 18/6 during veg (not 12/12 or shorter)
- If using CFL or weak LED, upgrade to a proper grow light
4. pH problems
The most common "hidden" cause of slow growth.
When the root-zone pH is outside the optimal range, the plant can't absorb certain nutrients — even though those nutrients are present in the soil. Growth slows because the plant is functionally nutrient- starved despite being fed.
Optimal pH ranges:

How to check:
- Test the pH of your feed water. If you're not pH-ing your water, this is very likely the problem
- Test runoff pH (water that drains out the bottom of the pot after watering). If runoff pH is below 5.5 or above 7.0, the root zone is out of range
The fix: pH every watering to the optimal range for your medium. If the root zone has drifted far, flush with correctly pH'd water at 1.5× pot volume, then resume normal feeding.

5. Temperature too low
Cannabis growth rate is directly temperature-dependent.

| Below 60°F | Very slow — plant is essentially dormant |
| 60–68°F | Slow — metabolic rate is reduced |
| 68–78°F | Optimal — fastest vegetative growth |
| 78–85°F | Still good (with adequate CO₂ and humidity) |
| Above 85°F | Heat stress — growth slows, leaves curl |
How to check: measure the temperature AT canopy level (not at the ceiling or floor of the tent). Night-time temperatures during lights- off are often 10–15°F lower than daytime — if daytime is 72°F and nighttime is 58°F, the plant is spending 6 hours per day in slow- growth conditions.
The fix: add a small heater during lights-off (on an Inkbird controller set to 65°F minimum). Insulate the tent floor if it's on concrete.
6. Nutrient deficiency or lockout
The plant needs building materials to grow. If they're not available, it stops building.
Slow growth without visible deficiency symptoms (yellowing, spotting) suggests early-stage nutrient shortage or lockout. The plant hasn't progressed to visual symptoms yet but has already slowed growth to conserve what it has.
Common early-stage deficiencies that cause slow growth:
- Nitrogen — the primary growth nutrient. Insufficient N = slow vegetative growth before the classic yellowing appears
- Phosphorus — especially in cold root zones. Causes dark, stunted growth
- Calcium — slow new growth, eventual brown spots on new leaves
How to check:
- Are you feeding nutrients at all? In soil, the medium provides nutrients for 3–4 weeks. After that, you need to feed
- Is the EC/PPM of your nutrient solution appropriate for the growth stage? Seedlings: 0.4–0.8 EC. Veg: 1.0–1.6 EC
- Check pH (above) — lockout looks like deficiency
The fix: ensure proper pH first (lockout mimics deficiency). Then check that your nutrient solution provides appropriate NPK for the growth stage.
7. Genetics
Some plants are just slow.
Before panicking:
- Indica-dominant strains often grow slower in early veg than sativas, then catch up
- Some seeds are simply weaker performers — this is normal genetic variation
- Autoflowers can have a slow start (first 2 weeks) before explosive growth
How to check: if all environmental factors are correct and the plant still seems slow, compare it to its siblings (if growing multiple plants). If one is slow and the others aren't, it's likely genetics.
The fix: give it time. If the plant is healthy (green leaves, no symptoms), it may just be a slower phenotype. If it's significantly behind its siblings after 3–4 weeks with no explanation, consider culling it and replacing with a stronger plant.
Quick diagnostic flow
Ask these questions in order:
- Am I watering too often? → Let soil dry before watering
- What do the roots look like? → Check for rot, binding, cold
- Is the light adequate? → 30–50W/sq ft, 18/6, proper height
- Am I pH-ing my water? → Target 6.3–6.5 (soil) or 5.8–6.0 (coco/hydro)
- Is the temperature right? → 68–78°F at canopy, min 65°F at night
- Am I feeding? → After week 3–4 in pre-amended soil, you need to start feeding
- Is it just genetics? → Compare to siblings, give it time
Common mistakes
- Adding more nutrients when the plant is slow — the instinct is to feed more, but slow growth is usually NOT about insufficient feeding. It's overwatering, pH, or environment. Adding more nutrients to a locked-out or overwatered plant makes it worse
- Reducing light "to help the plant recover" — unless there's light stress (bleaching, leaf curl), reducing light reduces the plant's energy supply and further slows growth. The plant usually needs MORE light, not less
- Transplanting a stressed plant — if the plant is already struggling, transplant shock makes it worse. Fix the underlying problem first, transplant after recovery
- Panic-changing multiple things at once — adjust one variable, wait 3–5 days to see the response, then adjust the next. Changing light + nutrients + watering simultaneously makes it impossible to identify which change helped
